Shabbat Shalom
Leave your homeland and go to the place where I will show you.
Why does G-d not identify the location of the place? Why does it remain a mystery? Many answers abound but one speaks deeply to us today. Although these words were spoken to Avraham and Sara over 3500 years ago, the message could not be more resonant. The command to leave their homeland, society and family tested Avraham and Sara's commitment to realizing the vision of Israel. In their time they were truly alone. Yet, they garnered the courage, tenacity and strength of spirit to forge a new path and hearken to the voice of G-d. Generation after generation, the dream of Israel stirs in the hearts and minds of our people. Yet, it has only survived because of people who struggled, believed and fought for her future.
This past Sunday, I was reminded of this in two ways. We held a advocacy breakfast attended by fifty people. We are grateful to representatives from AIPAC, ADL, and Stand with Us who attended. There is so much work to be done as we have seen just from this past week in Washington and on college campuses. I will send a fuller update next week and on what we learned at the breakfast.
On Sunday evening. I attended the FIDF event in Stamford. I was inspired by the young men and women from IDF who embrace the dream and are on the front lines. We must do what we can to support them and bolster their spirits.
Lech Lecha. It is a call not only for our ancestors but for us as well. Consider joining me on our family mission this summer to Israel. Whether visiting, advocating, praying, donating or supporting Israel, we must all ask ourselves how we are heeding this timeless call. Israel needs us and we need Israel.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
