Reminder: Main Sanctuary service starts at 8:45 am Tomorrow
The gifts, the lights and the latkes capture the uplifting spirit of Chanukah. Thank God, the holiday offers great memories and times. However, the holidays are designed as spiritual battery packs to recharge our souls. What message resonates with you?
This Shabbat offers a relevant gateway for growth. It is Shabbat marking the new month, Rosh Chodesh Tevet, a day intrinsically bound to Chanukah. What is the connection?
Prior to the Chanukah revolt, the Syrian Greeks instituted harsh measures against the Jews. In an effort to eradicate Judaism, they forbade observance of Shabbat, circumcision and, oddly enough, the celebration of the new month, Rosh Chodesh. Shabbat and circumcision represent the bond between God and the Jewish people, but why would the renewal of the months evoke the wrath of the Syrian Greeks?
Rabbi Gedalya Schorr explains that the observance of Rosh Chodesh embodies the Jewish people's capacity for renewal. Like the moon, which waxes and wanes but always reappears, so too our nation endures. Our power to outlast other nations draws life from God every month. The Syrian Greeks seethed at the notion of our unique relationship with God.
Like ISIS, Iran, radical Islamist ideology and the Nazis, they sought to eradicate the Jewish people and Israel. As Hitler, may his name be erased, proclaimed, "The Ten Commandments have lost their validity. Conscience is a Jewish invention; it is a blemish like circumcision." The holiday of Chanukah and the observance of Rosh Chodesh proclaim even louder, Am Yisrael Chai. The lights of Chanukah will overwhelm the forces of evil and darkness.
We must find the strength, faith and fortitude from the holiday to be renewed in our mission and rejuvenated in our role as God's ambassadors to the world. We are God's partners in heralding a time of light and peace to the world.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom, Happy Rosh Chodesh and joyous Chanukah!

Rabbi Daniel Cohen
