The Purpose of the Priestly Blessing One of the most famous verses in the entire Torah is the blessing of the Kohanim. God directs Aharon to charge the Kohanim with offering the priestly blessing. God states, "So shall you bless the children of Israel. Say to them. May God shine his face upon you...and may God grant you peace..and I will bless them." Although these words are thousands of years old and remain timeless, there are a few questions worth asking. - Why does God need the Kohanim to bless us? In fact, the Kohanim acknowledge as such by holding their palms upright signifying that they are merely conduits for God's blessing. Why do we need their agency?
- Secondly, why does God emphasize at the end, "I will bless you."
- Finally, what are the implication of the words, "I will place my name amidst the Jewish people?"
One of the commentators suggests a simple yet profound idea. God does not need the Kohanim to bless us. God blesses us..all the time. Yet, we forget. In times of joy, we take too much credit and in times of sadness, we wonder where is God? The Kohanim are not blessing us, but reminding us that God is the source of all and a constant presence in our lives. The words, "May God shine his face upon you" should actually be understood that God shines his face upon you. Remember God everyday of your life. The meaning of God placing his name upon us is an affirmation of the expectation that we will acknowledge God as ever present in our life. God reiterates, "I will bless you" and the Kohanim remind you of this reality in your life. This realization took on new meaning for me during Shavuot. A friend, Benny Malkin, who was visiting shared with me about a great Torah Scholar welcoming a guest to his Sukkah. When the guest arrived, the Rabbi was in the midst of the Grace after Meals. Following the end of the first paragraph, the Rabbi recited the first two words of the next paragraph and paused.."Nodeh Lecha"...Thank you..and said these simple words as if he truly believed he was talking directly to God. Thank you. The pregnant pause is a reminder that all too often we race though the words of Birkat Hamazon as if it is a holy incantation and obligation without truly reflecting on the essence of the prayer, which is an indispensable expression of gratitude directly to the Almighty. In the immortal words of King David in Psalm 118, "Give thanks to God for he is good, his love endures forever." Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Daniel Cohen

- BACK TO SCHOOL SHOP, INC is an all-volunteer non-profit organization whose mission is to enable every child to have access to the basic school clothing and supplies they need and in doing so to help build the confidence and enthusiasm necessary for a successful school year. Since the first Back to School Shop event in 2015, over 850 children have been outfitted for school. Each summer before the start of the new school year, we operate a one-day pop-up store where economically disadvantaged elementary school children can shop for brand new school clothes and supplies. While the children are shopping with volunteer personal shoppers, their parents can visit the on-site Japha Family Resource Center where 20 community organizations will be on hand to provide information about important community services. Each year nearly 250 community volunteers come together to make this special day happen for Stamford children. Visit www.backtoschoolshop.org for more information, to make a donation, or to register to volunteer for our 5th Anniversary event on July 28!
- DO A MITZVAH! CONSIDER SUPPORTING THE JFS KOSHER FOOD PANTRY by purchasing Mitzvah Baskets and/or Mitzvah Centerpieces instead of flowers for your next simcha at CAS. Distributions from the JFS Kosher Food Pantry have increased by more than 1000 since the recession. With this tremendous upsurge in use, JFS is constantly challenged to keep the food pantry full. Your generosity enables JFS to help those in our community in their greatest moments of need.
