Beyond the football, the turkey, family and friends, will we take the time to make someone's day? You may have seen it or heard about it but if not, now is the time to experience and share the Elijah Moment Campaign. An Elijah moment is seizing an opportunity to give. Through an act of generosity as simple as a kind word or paying it forward at a local coffee shop by surprising the person behind you, we can transform a fleeting moment into an eternal one. In partnership with my friend Pastor Greg Doll, we launched the 40-Day campaign which began on Sunday, November 23rd and ends on January 1st. Through Thanksgiving, Chanukah, Christmas and New Years, we encourage everyone to discover Elijah moments. Elijah is a Biblical prophet who appears through history to spread light in the midst of darkness. He is the person who comes into your life and makes your day! A seemingly minor act of generosity can change a life. Every person can be an Elijah. Although from different faiths, we believe in the potential of every human being to experience the Divine through acts of generosity. In a world with increasing violence, there is no better time to call on citizens to flood the world with acts of kindness. Last week, we organized two waves of kindness at Starbucks and Beldotti's bakery in Stamford. We simply offered to pay for someone's drink or pastry and then asked them to pay it forward. The goodwill is endless. One woman upon receiving her coffee walked the store and offered to pay for others. One fellow shared he would offer free meals to workers in Mt. Kisco and another would purchase clothes for the homeless as their way of growing the goodness. Imagine if we triggered an Elijah Moment at half time in the Super Bowl or this Friday at noon in stores across the nation, thousands of people would turn to a stranger, exchange a hello or shared a kind word or act. The world could be transformed. During this season of joy and giving, we encourage every person regardless of their faith to be an Elijah and make a difference now and forever. Message from Cantor Bokow Dear Friends I am now the coordinator of the weekly leining (Torah reading) and what I have been working on is on streamlining the process of the leiners so that we are prepared as a shul with the leining without the last minute pressure of looking for a leiner. I have set up a rotation of "regulars" who have volunteered to assist us. The schedule is set up approximately 6-8 weeks in advance and allows those who lein to prepare the parsha for our benefit. Having said this, I strongly encourage those who wish to participate in the leining from time to time,even if it is just an aliyah or two to please do so. This is a wonderful opportunity to lein your bar-mitzvah parsha or aliyah for the shul. Please do so by contact me as EARLY as possible so that I may put your name on the schedule without having someone else on the schedule prepare needlessly. Looking forward to working with you this. Warm regards, Cantor B Important Note CAS FIRE EVACUATION PROCEDURES -PLEASE READ! WE PLAN A FIRE DRILL SHABBAT, DECEMBER 6 If you see smoke or flames, activate the nearest fire alarm. The alarm makes a very loud piercing sound. Once this alarm reaches the alarm company, they notify the fire and police departments. If you have a cell phone dial (911) If the fire is in a small localized area, use a fire extinguisher. Do not attempt to fight a large or spreading fire. Leave the building immediately. Do not try to get you coat- leave the building. This is an emergency. Do not assume that it is a drill. Each area of the Synagogue has an emergency exit card, showing the closest and fastest exits. Proceed to the nearest exit in an efficient and orderly manner. Assist those in need as you leave. The Gabayim/Rabbi from each minyan will remove at least one sefer torah from the aron kodesh. Once outside the building, move towards the former Hebrew School building at the end of the parking lot. Await instructions. DO NOT try to go to your children. If they are in groups, they will be evacuated as a group by their youth leaders. You will find them at their evacuation points - in the church parking lot. Do not re-enter the building without authorization from the incident commander, emergency personnel or Rabbi. DO NOT USE THE ELEVATOR-Only use stairways or exits. Emergency Exits- Please use the closest door to your seat: Men's balcony (Strawberry Hill Side) - exit down the stairs toward Colonial Road or out the Strawberry Hill main entrance. These are mostly able bodied men who agree to the strict rules of the PacificHouse going out looking for work, and agreeing to inspections and the like. There are usually 60-80 men at the luncheon we provide. Clean, peel, prepare and accent the kosher food in the Shul kitchen from 9-11 From 11-11:30 transport the food to 25 Pacific St - the Pacific House Homeless Shelter From 11:30-12 Setup - put out the placemats, set the tables, ready the drinks and trays Must reserve in advance Serve the first group from 12-1pm appetizers, main dish, dessert and drinks Serve the 2nd group from 1-2pm appetizers, main dish, dessert and drinks We are looking for food donations of meat balls, vegetables, noodle dishes (all meat or parve), fruit plates, and the like. Beyond the football, the turkey, family and friends, will we take the time to make someone's day? You may have seen it or heard about it but if not, now is the time to experience and share the Elijah Moment Campaign. An Elijah moment is seizing an opportunity to give. Through an act of generosity as simple as a kind word or paying it forward at a local coffee shop by surprising the person behind you, we can transform a fleeting moment into an eternal one. In partnership with my friend Pastor Greg Doll, we launched the 40-Day campaign which began on Sunday, November 23rd and ends on January 1st. Through Thanksgiving, Chanukah, Christmas and New Years, we encourage everyone to discover Elijah moments. Elijah is a Biblical prophet who appears through history to spread light in the midst of darkness. He is the person who comes into your life and makes your day! A seemingly minor act of generosity can change a life. Every person can be an Elijah. Although from different faiths, we believe in the potential of every human being to experience the Divine through acts of generosity. In a world with increasing violence, there is no better time to call on citizens to flood the world with acts of kindness. Last week, we organized two waves of kindness at Starbucks and Beldotti's bakery in Stamford. We simply offered to pay for someone's drink or pastry and then asked them to pay it forward. The goodwill is endless. One woman upon receiving her coffee walked the store and offered to pay for others. One fellow shared he would offer free meals to workers in Mt. Kisco and another would purchase clothes for the homeless as their way of growing the goodness. The world could be transformed. During this season of joy and giving, we encourage every person regardless of their faith to be an Elijah and make a difference now and forever. Message from Cantor Bokow Dear Friends I am now the coordinator of the weekly leining (Torah reading) and what I have been working on is on streamlining the process of the leiners so that we are prepared as a shul with the leining without the last minute pressure of looking for a leiner. I have set up a rotation of "regulars" who have volunteered to assist us. The schedule is set up approximately 6-8 weeks in advance and allows those who lein to prepare the parsha for our benefit. Having said this, I strongly encourage those who wish to participate in the leining from time to time,even if it is just an aliyah or two to please do so. This is a wonderful opportunity to lein your bar-mitzvah parsha or aliyah for the shul. Please do so by contact me as EARLY as possible so that I may put your name on the schedule without having someone else on the schedule prepare needlessly. Looking forward to working with you this. The alarm makes a very loud piercing sound. Once this alarm reaches the alarm company, they notify the fire and police departments. If you have a cell phone dial (911) If the fire is in a small localized area, use a fire extinguisher. Do not attempt to fight a large or spreading fire. Leave the building immediately. Do not try to get you coat- leave the building. This is an emergency. Do not assume that it is a drill. Each area of the Synagogue has an emergency exit card, showing the closest and fastest exits. Proceed to the nearest exit in an efficient and orderly manner. Assist those in need as you leave. The Gabayim/Rabbi from each minyan will remove at least one sefer torah from the aron kodesh. Once outside the building, move towards the former Hebrew School building at the end of the parking lot. Await instructions. DO NOT try to go to your children. If they are in groups, they will be evacuated as a group by their youth leaders. You will find them at their evacuation points - in the church parking lot. Do not re-enter the building without authorization from the incident commander, emergency personnel or Rabbi. DO NOT USE THE ELEVATOR-Only use stairways or exits.
