Infusing the Mundane with Meaning: Reboot Your Life with Torah

Parshat Ki Tetzei contains more mitzvot than any other Torah portion. In fact over 10 percent of the 613 commandments are enumerated in the Parsha.

Is there a common denominator among these Divine directives? They seem to span many different life circumstances. For instance, they include marriage, divorce, charity, returning lost objects, sending away the mother bird, helping someone in need along the road, and much more. What unites the cases?

Interestingly, the word Ki - When - serves as the introduction to many of these topics. Through the use of this word, the Torah is conveying to us a profound lesson in the life of a Jew. God is not related to the home, synagogue or school. Whenever and wherever we may be we have a divine directive to instill meaning into the mundane. This idea is the essence of the Torah and in particular Torah study.

Torah awakens within us the power of living vertically and not horizontally. Rabbi Nathan Lopes Cardozo reflects, "When we live our lives in the constant pursuit of new material objects, believing that through them we will find meaning and joy, it would behoove us to look around and see the continuous boredom in which our Western world finds itself. The excitement of new possessions leads to the trivialization of our lives after a day or two - but only if we view them horizontally. If we look at what we have in a vertical dimension, as Parshat Ki Tetze exemplifies, we will find meaning in the process of constant spiritual growth and see daily encounters in the light of eternity."

The myriad of Mitzvot affirms that there are no actions of insignificance. Our lives are not common and irrelevant. From the food we eat, to the relationships we forge, to the holidays we celebrate, the moral decisions we make, the choices to help another human being, Torah infuses our lives with meaning, joy and purpose. Even the most trivial deeds, should be attuned to eternity.

As we embark on the new year, make a new commitment to Torah. No matter our age or background, finding even a few minutes every day to learn with your children, a spouse, a friend, or on our own will provide deep pleasure because it enables us to instill divine eternity into all of our deeds, making the small things significant, the common unique, and the momentary eternal.

Wishing you and your family a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

  • Agudath Sholom is honored to welcome the Millstone Scholars Program this fall!  30 Minute Orientation Virtual Session on Monday, September 18th, 8:15 PM Zoom ID: 898 4755 7720 Passcode: 748166 - The Millstone Scholars program is an in-person selective new educational and leadership initiative of the Tikvah Fund for public school and private school 7th and 8th grade students.
