Shabbat Shalom
Last year, one of the most inspiring moments for our community was Shabbat Across Stamford. In conjunction with the National Jewish Outreach Program, we coalesced as a community across synagogues and transcended denominations to celebrate Shabbat as one. We express our heartfelt gratitude to the UJF and Marcia Lane for organizing this phenomenal event.Although we davened in separate services, we lit candles, ate, sang and learned together. We had the unique opportunity to share Shabbat with other Rabbis and a diverse spectrum of our special community. This year, the venue is right around the corner at the Stamford Plaza. I encourage everyone to sign up and join for what promises, God willing, to be another unforgettable and moving experience. To learn more and register, visit http://www.ujf.org/. and check out Rabbi Buchwald's "Vote Shabbat Party" video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWwokQazaS4.
On a community note, Yasher Koach to the Stamford Chevra Kadisha on their quiet yet essential and holy service to our community. It is traditional to recognize their efforts on the anniversary of Moshe's death, the 7th of Adar and in this spirit, we pay tribute to their efforts and in particular, Rochel Attar, who is this year's honoree.
Finally, we are excited to welcome another assistant Rabbi candidate, Rabbi Oran Zweiter, to our shul this Shabbat and look forward to a wonderful experience together with him.
Wishing you and your families Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

CAS Reconstruction Update
Dear Fellow Member:
I want to let you know that our three Building Reconstruction Project committees are hard at work and have made significant progress. Our Building Committee, chaired by Mitch Balsam, has interviewed four architectural firms to carry out our vision and expects to appoint one in the next few months. Our Capital Campaign committee, chaired by Elissa Klapper and Harvey Kaminski, has received pledges for well over $4 million - we are grateful for those who have supported the campaign and invite all members to participate. Our Ball Field Land committee, chaired by Dean Schuckman, has discussed a number of uses with developers and has made real progress toward selecting one.
As we have moved forward with the project overall, our timetable for construction has become clearer. We now target to begin construction after the High Holidays, sometime this Fall. My personal thanks to everyone who has contributed their time and funds. I will continue to update you on our progress and am happy to discuss the project.
Sincerely,
Dr. Stuart Waldstreicher, President
Welcome new members Shoshana, Seth & Kohelet Lubin and Justin, Sarah, Olivia & Caleb Breiner.

Rabbi Cohen's Halacha Question of the Week
  • Question: On Shabbat, what is the best way to serve tea?
  • Answer: Good question! There are two general options. One way is to make tea essence (a very potent mixture) and then when you want to drink tea on Shabbat, you pour hot water in a cup and add the tea essence. The second method is placing a tea bag into a kli shelishi (tertiary cup). You create a kos shelishi by filling a cup with hot water from an urn and then pouring water from the cup into a second cup (this becomes kli shlishi) or fill a water carafe from the urn, bring it to table and and then after each person pour hot water into a cup, you can add a tea bag. This is what we do in our home. For more information, contact Rabbi Cohen.
Shabbat Table Topic of the Week - Parshat Terumah According to Jewish law, is it preferable to give small amounts of charity many times or give a a single large amount? Why should this be so? What act of Tzedakah stands out most in your mind? Why?

Dr. Dovid Katz: The Old Hebrew -Yiddish Conflict and Its Ongoing Legacies
Dr. Katz's involvement with Holocaust issues started with his thousands of hours of Yiddish dialectological interviews with survivors from the historic Lithuanian lands and turned to both academic research and public activism when Lithuanian prosecutors began accusing survivors of "war crimes" for having joined the anti-Nazi partisans. He coined the term "Holocaust Obfuscation" to define 21st century East European revisionism and in 2009 founded the web journal DefendingHistory.com which he has edited since.
