You Will Live - Deverst Laiben
The proximity on the calendar between Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day), Yom Hazikaron (Israel Memorial Day) and Yom Haatzmaut (Israel Independence Day) accentuates the challenge both personally and nationally to celebrate in the aftermath of tragedy. How do we find joy in the wake of sadness? These questions require much introspection, but in light of this past week's Holocaust program in Stamford in which Judy Altman was interviewed, I was reminded of the words I shared about her when she received our Chai Award at last year's Annual Dinner.
Moses states at the end of his life, "See I place before you the choice of good and evil, life and death. He enjoins the people Choose Life." We honor Judith because she has chosen and continually chooses life. As a survivor of four concentration camps, she had every excuse to be embittered and retreat. Yet, she emerged from a world of darkness to light a candle to ignite thousands of flames. She is a beacon of hope and a model for the strength of the human spirit. I am inspired by her faith.
She speaks worldwide to thousands of students about her experience in the Holocaust. She urges them to do their utmost to insure never again, to learn and think for themselves and to always look to help another human being. When I asked Judith about her source of strength, she shared the following story. "While in Auschwitz, I was in a line to be chosen for life or death. Dr. Joseph Mengele, the notorious Nazi, chose me, my niece and my nephew. As I walked, I passed by my father. It was the last time I would ever see him. He placed his hand on my head and said Yitele Judy Deverst Laiben You will live. I never forgot those words. They guided me, inspired me throughout my life."
The words of her father "You should live" have given life to thousands, have created light in darkness and hope in the midst of despair. His words embody the capacity of all us to foster life through the power of our words.
May we all be inspired to transform darkness into light, ignite hope in each other and witness the full redemption of Israel speedily in our days. Please join us this Wednesday evening at 7 pm at CAS for our Israel Memorial and Independence Day events.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
Service Note There will be an early Mincha on Wednesday at 6:30 PM prior to the program in addition to the regularly scheduled minyan.
