My Grandfather's 100th Birthday: A Pesach Refection in his Memory and in his Honor

This past Thursday would have been my grandfather Harry Umansky's 100th birthday. He was a person who embodied his name Aharon Avraham, a gentle and peaceful soul dedicated to the service of others. His smiles, integrity, love of family and devotion to my grandmother Claire, and his humble beginnings on the Lower East Side are etched in my mind.

He was a mensch second to none and some of my strongest life memories were forged by his side. He saw the beauty in people, nurtured our passions, possessed an upbeat attitude to life, a warmth and hug which taught me about unconditional love. I miss him. One of times I cherished most were the sedarim we shared together with my grandmother, she should live and be well, with our family in Atlanta. They always came early to assist with the preparations, whether going to the farmer's market, making the matzah balls, or preparing the home.

Yet, one of my deepest recollections was sitting at the seder table as we celebrated the holiday and a seemingly minor memory. When we distributed the matzah after the blessing, we saved the burnt pieces for my grandfather. He loved the taste of the charred pieces and it was an honor to be the one to give them to him.

He lives in me and all of our family. In life, we can never fully anticipate which memories will endure. Yet, more than any other holiday, Pesach affords this opportunity to create memories and bonds across generations. Prepare for and cherish these next two weeks. Use the Seder as a springboard to learn about your history and invest in your future.

May the spirit of my grandfather and all of our ancestors inspire us to instill within our children and grandchildren the foundations for Jewish continuity for all eternity.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Fairway Kashrut Update from Rabbi Cohen

Thank you to everyone for your efforts in contacting Fairway about the situation at the Kosher Meat Department. Many you received the message below from Fairway Management:

In an effort to bring you and our other valued customers the highest quality meat, the highest level of food safety, and a higher level of Rabbinical Supervision, we made the decision to offer prepackaged Kosher Meats instead of having a Kosher Meat Counter.

We will continue to carry a wide variety of packaged Kosher meats. Additionally, we will retain our KOF-K Kosher Certifications for our Special Occasion cakes available from our Catering Department as well as products from our Seafood, Cheese, Dairy, Traditional and Kosher Grocery departments.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

I have been in touch with the new meat supplier - Shor Habor and they are doing their best to offer the highest quality meat. They are offering 15 percent off coupons to encourage people to try their product. Click here to get the coupon.  If you have any questions, please contact their representative Feivish Waxman 347-524-8681.

Fire Safety
Fire Safety Resources for Communities from the OU
The tragedy this past Shabbat in Brooklyn has left all of us reeling in pain and utter shock. We must keep praying for the speedy recovery of the seriously injured mother and surviving child (their Hebrew names are Gila bat Frances and Tziporah bat Gila) as well as strength and consolation for their father and extended family.
This tragedy must serve as a reminder to all of us to be as conscious as possible of our own safety and the safety of our family and neighbors, particularly on Shabbat, Yom Tov, and especially at Pesach time.
The Rabbinical Council of America has circulated some very important resources for communities; some additional points are also made
  • Working Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors. As we clean our homes for Pesach and carefully go from room to room making sure all is in order, this is a perfect time to ensure that appropriate alarms are installed in the proper locations with fresh batteries.
  • Safety Certification. Please ensure that the electrical appliances we use, especially over Shabbat and Yom Tov are properly certified for safety. We are, correctly, particular to ensure that the food we eat is properly certified and to ensure that electric kettles, hot plates and so on have passed the "UL" - Underwriters Laboratories - inspection.
  • Please remember that in many instances hot plates can be used with heavy duty time switches to ensure that they do not need to stay on for an entire Shabbat in accordance with rabbinical approval.
  • Kashering utensils for Pesach can be dangerous. Please check with your local synagogue regarding public kashering availability
  • While the custom is to use a candle for Bedikat Chametz (Searching for Chametz the night before Pesach) in any areas where it is even remotely dangerous to do so, such as closets, near flammable furniture etc, a flashlight must be used.

Please see the following resources for more information. May the Almighty keep us all safe, send healing to the injured and wipe away the tears from every face.

The Department of Synagogue & Community Services of the Orthodox Union appreciates the work of the Rabbinical Council of America, Lincoln Square Synagogue, and the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York in providing resources for this email.

  • PESACH OPPORTUNITY FROM HECKY ATTAR: It has come to my attention that there is a great opportunity in our community to fulfill the mitzvah of Maot Chitim, providing Pesach food for the needy. As you can imagine the Rebbeim at Yeshiva Bais Binyomin do not receive high compensation. Therefore, when it comes to providing the bare holiday necessities for their families it becomes a real challenge. Please help the Yeshiva meet the cost of this very worthy endeavor. We thank you in advance for your consideration. Please make your tax deductible checks to: Yeshiva Bais Binyomin, Chasdei Lev Project, 132 Prospect St., Stamford, CT 06901.
