Taking Your Breath Away

Life is not measured in the breaths we take, but moments that take our breath away.

I do not know the source for this aphorism but I believe we would all agree that it rings true. We likely lament that we wish we lived our lives more in sync with this spirit. Too often we are mesmerized by the monotony of life and walk sightless among miracles. We wish not only to count the days of our lives but make them truly count. In the eternal words of King David, Teach us to count our days so we may gain a heart of wisdom.

It is not easy. The Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard wrote that boredom is the root of all evil. The routine of daily life coupled with an innate sense of entitlement dulls our senses to the significance of every moment, gift and opportunity. In truth, we may be breathing but we are not alive. Every moment in which we are not tuned into our higher purpose is a moment lost forever.

The consequences can be devastating. In this week's Parsha of Shelach we read about the tragic episode of the spies. The underlying theme and tension in the Parsha is exemplified by two words - Raah -to see and Latur - to spy. Each one suggests sight but the implications of each one are very different. All of the leaders saw the same facts in Israel. However, ten of them chose to focus on the problems and only two, Caleb and Yehoshua, focused on the possibilities. Dull to the Divine, these ten men triggered a national hysteria and faith failure and an entire generation of men died in the desert. The raison d'etre of the Jewish people is to inspire an awareness of God in the world, a generation oblivious to God and his infinite power was unworthy to enter the land of Israel and become His ambassadors.

The Talmud explains based on the verses in the Torah that as reparations for this historic failure of ten men to see the hand of God, ten men are needed to form a quorum to amplify the name of God through a minyan three times a day. The women did not lack faith. Hence, they are not required to participate in a minyan. It is the men's failure and the men must own it forever.

Whether men or women, God is conveying to us one of the most important strategies to truly be awake to the moments that take our breath away. The answers are prayer and blessings. They are the pause that refreshes. Stop and give thanks. Take time to align yourself every day to who you aspire to be. If we do not, life will become a blur. See - Raah - the possibilities and power of the Divine in you and in the world.

As the summer begins, take a moment to make a pledge to attend at least one weekday or Sunday minyan. The daily minyan is the heartbeat of the shul. Every Amen counts. Making the time is a matter of priorities. Let me know which day you choose.

God willing, all of us in our community will sensitize our senses to the gift of every day and the magnificent blessings endowed to us in every breath we take.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen
