Shabbat Shalom
Dvar Torah June 13th 2020

As president of the shul for the past two years, I am about to do the last thing on my bucket list, this week's Dvar Torah. (Drinking a beer while doing the Shabbat announcements was also on that list)

This week's Dvar is adapted from something Jonathan Sacks said and pertains to us today at Agudath Sholom.

In this week's parsha, Moses has a breakdown. It is the lowest point of his entire career as a leader. Listen to his words to God:

"Why have you brought this trouble on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me? Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? . . . I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me. If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me-if I have found favor in your eyes-and do not let me face my own ruin." (Numbers 11: 11-15)

Yet the cause seems disproportionate to its effect. The people have done what they so often did before. They complain. Many times Moses had faced this kind of complaint from the people before.

Usually, when leaders face repeated challenges, they grow stronger each time. They learn how to respond, how to cope. They develop resilience, a thick skin. They formulate survival strategies (like Shul presidents). Why then does Moses seem to do the opposite, not only here but often throughout the book of Bamidbar?

A fascinating insight is provided by the innovative work of Prof. Ronald Heifetz, co-founder and director of the Center for Public Leadership at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Heifetz distinguishes between technical challenges and adaptive challenges. A technical challenge is one where you have a problem and someone else has the solution. You are ill, you go to the doctor, he diagnoses your condition and prescribes a pill. All you have to do is follow the instructions.

Adaptive challenges are different. They arise when we are part of the problem. You are ill, you go to the doctor, and he tells you: I can give you a pill, but the truth is that you are going to have to change your lifestyle. You are out of condition, you sleep too little and are exposed to too much stress. Pills won't help you until you change the way you live. Adaptive leadership is called for when the world is changing, circumstances are no longer what they were, and what once worked works no more. There is no quick fix, no pill, no simple following of instructions. We have to change. The leader cannot do it for us.

Our world as we have known forever has been shaken to the core in the past 90 days. Three months ago we were celebrating Purim with hundreds of adults and kids. And today our building is closed. What we took for granted yesterday is today a dream for tomorrow. As we move into the summer and the High holiday season, everything that we have known and loved about CAS will be different. Our building will be used very sparingly over the summer. As far as the High Holidays while we can't give you specifics today, we should all assume that what we are used to in terms of the service you attend, seat you sit in, person you sit next to will be VERY DIFFERENT this year.

We all have a choice. Like the Jews in the desert, we can accept the short term discomfort that we will all go through and adapt to "this year's normal" or we unfortunately will get stuck in the blame game and lose sight of all the beauty our community offers to us. Please support the leadership of CAS as we move into these uncharted waters. They will have our best interests and safety at heart. Let us all hope and pray that this "new normal" is one and done!

Wishing you all a Shabbat Shalom

Updated Tips for Shabbat
  1. Reach out to someone older or under quarantine. Let them know that they are not alone and that you are thinking of them.
  2. Print out a Torah idea today to share at the Shabbat and Shavuot Table. Here are four excellent resources: www.ou.org, www.aish.com, www.chabad.org, www.yutorah.org
  3. Shabbat Torah Reading is Parshat Behaalotcha Numbers 8:1 - 12:16. Take a moment to read Rabbi Jonathan Sacks on Loneliness and Faith, an insight for the parsha. click here
  4. The Haftorah is the vision of the Menorah in the 3rd Temple. The importance of possessing the vision to see God in our lives is a major theme. To learn more, visit Rabbi David Aaron's website and Haftorah Insights from Zachary Beer.
  5. Many study Chapter 2 of Pirkei Avot this Shabbat. You can study the text here
  6. Social Distancing Friendly Reminder: Please maintain social distancing. We strongly recommend that each person educate themselves as to the risks involved in their various activities and ways to mitigate them. And then consider how those ways would play out in their specific circumstances. Here is a helpful article that describes some activities and how they rate on a safety scale (another risk resource tool is here).
  7. Dress for Shabbat. Whether you are in shul or not, we still accord Shabbat and Yom Tov the dignity and kavod it so richly deserves by dressing as if we were going to shul.
  8. Think about someone you miss seeing in shul. Make a mental note to call him/her after Havdalah.
  9. Join us for a Sing Along Kaballat Shabbat with Rabbi Zwieter this week at 7 PM and beginning next week, we will Zoom the 6:45 PM one at shul.

Mitzvah Moment Opportunity  Rav Kook writes: Do not complain of the darkness, increase the light. As many of you know, Marco Vuono, owner of Marco Jewelers on 6th Street in Stamford, was shot and killed in a robbery in late March. His store has been shut until June 8th. On Sunday, I met his son, David, who is shaken and trying to keep not only the store open, but his father's memory alive. Let's help him and the family not only financially but also in spirit. For the next 72 hours, lets create a flash mob of kindness in memory of Marco. The store is open by appt only via email at info@marcojewelers.net. Thank you in advance and together we can all increase the light. May Marco's memory be for a blessing.

For Your Loves Ones:  The resumption of minyanim provides an opportunity for us to read the Torah and also recite a Kel Maleh, a memorial prayer, for loved ones. If you would like me to recite the prayer for a Yaarzeit either coming up or from the past few months, please email Rabbi Cohen at rabbicohen@cas-stamford.org. May the memories of your loved ones be for a blessing.

Thank you  to everyone who has delivered Challot to our seniors during the past few months. It is very appreciated!! If you like to be a sponsor of the program, please contact Rabbi Cohen.

Covid Update
Keilim Mikvah Update  While the Keilim Mikvah is closed, the Beth Din of America has established a mechanism to allow for the use of new utensils. This form was created by the Beth Din of America (www.bethdin.org) to allow individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic to sell kelim to a non-Jew and borrow them back to use for themselves. Since kelim owned by a non-Jew do not require immersion in a mikvah, this process allows for the use of the keilim without immersing them. You should complete this form only after the kelim are in your possession.

Kaddish Update   As mentioned, Aish HaTorah will keep your loved one in mind for the recitation of Kaddish by signing up here but you may also submit the name to a standing minyan in the IDF. Sign up here
