One Hello Never Forgotten
When do we remember a face? When is a person not forgotten? What memories will linger beyond 2015 and endure forever?
The Torah teaches us that God remembers an act of kindness for thousands of generations. Think for a moment about an experience in your life when someone extended themselves to you, offered a hello or a helping hand and made all the difference in that one moment. I am sure a few examples come to mind. Coming to a new school, place of work, or organization is never easy. Transitions are hard. It is possible to be in a room with hundreds of people and still feel lonely. Yet, one hello can wash away the feeling, warm our hearts and clear a path for connection.
When I arrived at Yeshiva University during orientation week as a freshman, I was overwhelmed by the course offerings and new environment. Coming from a small Jewish high school in Atlanta with my father as principal, my mother as a teacher and a class size of 15, New York City and college stirred within me excitement and trepidation. What classes would I choose? What would be my major? Who would be my friends? Until this day, I will never forget the kindness of a senior, Ronnie Rosenberg. On the first day of orientation, he introduced himself and sat down with me to help me organize my schedule and show me the "lay of the land." He introduced me to some of his peers and instilled within me the confidence to forge ahead. His smile, wisdom and generosity of spirit, transformed my experience and laid the groundwork for my experience at YU.
Think about it for a moment. Ronnie made a conscious decision to reach out to me and move outside his comfort zone. It did not cost him any money; only his knowledge, time and a smile. That exchange, and his kindness, lives in me over 25 years later. This week's Torah portion of Shemot highlights the importance of words across time. Moshe laments the gossip of the Jewish people as the root cause of their exile. God remembers the Jewish people when they harness the power of words to pray and evoke the secret code of Joseph, "pakod pakaditi" as affirmation of redemption. Finally, Moshe reaching out to a fellow Jew in pain sparks the flame of freedom.
What will you do today that will be worthy of future memory?
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
