A Roadie for God and Kosher Movies: Life Lessons from my Father

My father is one of my heroes. He has taught me so much about life and continues to inspire me every day through his words and example. I remember from my youth his emphasis on our mission to grow, learn and realize our unique spiritual potential. We are here not as casual spectators but as partners with the Almighty in discovering the Divine. God can be found everywhere. The Torah's prism reveals His presence. Whether in nature, literature, music, or seizing an opportunity to do a mitzvah, we reveal holiness in the world.

As a teenager, I was a roadie for God. My father started a band called "Matzah" (in the days when the band "Bread" was popular) and I was one of his"roadies" as we schlepped the equipment to a gig. He got me involved in helping with the mitzvah. Lifting a synthesizer or rolling his drum set became acts of holiness.

Upon driving home from a film (we enjoyed a few drive in movies or Tuesday nights at the theater for the dollar runs), he always asked us (youngest to oldest), "How would you rate the film on a scale of 1-10 and why?" He was teaching us to see life critically and in its fullness. My father often cites the words of the Victorian poet Mathew Arnold who explains that the touchstones of literature can teach us about the human condition and about ourselves.

In this spirit, I am thrilled to host my father and step mother this Shabbat. My father is launching his new book "Kosher Movies: A Film Critic Discovers Life Lessons at the Cinema." The book reflects a worldview rooted in Torah and the modern world or "chicken soup for the soul meets Roger Ebert".

My father has reviewed almost 300 films and I encourage you to join me this Sunday morning at 9:30 AM at the shul as he shares some of his reflections on life, Torah and film. For event info see (https://sites.google.com/a/cas-stamford.org/book-breakfast/) and to learn more about Kosher Movies visit (www.koshermovies.com)

I am grateful for his guidance and love and pray that God grants him, Meryl and our family the blessings to enjoy good health and true joy for many years.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom
