Shabbat Shalom

For This You Were Chosen

More than any other time during the year, the days between Pesach and Shavuot evoke a sense of our generation's role in the arc of Jewish history. We are living in extraordinary times.

Within one week, we mark 70 years since the Holocaust, commemorate Israel Memorial Day and celebrate 67 years since the founding of the State of Israel. We hear stories of survivors, the tragedies and triumphs. In the next few days, we remember the soldiers who died fighting for Israel, the blessings of Israel as a haven for our people and a beacon of light unto the world. We are living at a historic crossroads we never could have imagined over 100 years ago.

We live in Stamford, CT in 2015. Not by fate but by design. Yet, all of our lives are intertwined with the events of Jewish history. My grandparents all immigrated to the United States in the early 20th century. I was born in America in 1967 a few months after the Six Day War when God returned our people to Jerusalem after 2000 years. I lived in Israel during the Ethiopian Jewry immigration, witnessed Natan Sharanksy arrive at Ben Gurion Airport, and sat in a sealed room wearing a gas mask during the Gulf War.

We all are born into a time for a reason and with a purpose.

In this season of mourning and joy, I am reminded of the immortal words of Moses to Aaron. The Midrash as quoted by Rashi explains that Aaron felt unworthy to serve in the Tabernacle. After all, he was somewhat responsible for the sin of the Golden Calf.

Moses tells Aaron: Why are you ashamed? You are forgiven. For this role (in the Tabernacle) you are chosen. In other words, if God calls on you at this time to serve, you are obligated to respond. God believes in you. Now is your time.

This is our time. We live after the Shoah and benefit from the historic gesture by God to restore our people to the land of Israel. For this generation, we are chosen. It is our time to respond and serve God, the Jewish people and the State of Israel.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and Happy Yom Haatzmaut,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Israel Action Update

  • Tuesday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted unanimously to advance the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015 (S.615). The legislation, authored by Sens. Bob Corker (R-TN) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ), requires the President to submit any nuclear agreement with Iran to Congress and establishes a procedure for congressional review.
  • Please call and thank Senator Murphy, who voted to report the bill out of committee and send it to the Senate floor. This is an important opportunity to show your appreciation for his support on this critical legislation, and highlight your hope that he will continue to work to ensure Iran does not have a pathway to a nuclear weapon. Sample Phone Script: "I am calling to thank Senator Murphy (202) 224-4041 for supporting the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015 (S. 615) in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. I appreciate his willingness to work in a bi-partisan manner to move this critical legislation forward. I hope that the Senator will vote for this legislation when it comes to the Senate floor, and will continue to support the need for Congress to play a role in limiting Iran's nuclear capabilities."

Paintings at the Met: A Jewish Perspective with Eitan Kastner
Jewish History through Western Art
Though Jews made up only a small minority of the European population in the year 1000, they played a surprisingly robust role in the development of European civilization in general and art in particular over the subsequent millennium. The galleries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art can serve as a textbook to recreate this history through paint and stone, wood and canvas. On this tour we will gain a better understanding of Jewish history in the west and the evolving perception of Jews by their European counterparts.

On this tour we will gain a better understanding of Jewish history in the west and the evolving perception of Jews by their European counterparts.
about our guide, Eitan Kastner
Eitan Kastner teaches history and art history at the Frisch School and is a licensed New York City Tour Guide, who leads Jewish themed tours at New York attractions and museums.
