Shabbat Shalom An Olympic Thought - The Heroes When we think of gold, silver and bronze, our minds immediately turn to the Olympics in South Korea. Much of the world is enthralled with the Games and the demonstration of human strength, spirit and capability. The Olympics are a testament to athleticism, ties that bind humanity and the possibility for peace. They are also an opportunity to celebrate the national spirit of a country. Yet, I was reminded of the limits of the Games in a recent article noting that during much of the 20th century, there was a steady flow of Olympic records broken. With new technologies and better nutrition developing, we could always anticipate new thresholds achieved. However, in the past 20 years, the rate of record breaking has declined signifying the limit of the human body. A human being can only skate or run so fast. It reminded me of the difference between the body and the soul. The body possesses physical limitations, but the soul does not. The human soul is indestructible and eternal. The Zohar teaches that energy never ceases to exist. Nothing is lost in this world; even the breath of the mouth, the word spoken by a human being, a sound. God renews the soul's capacity every day. In this spirit, I was struck by a midrash in the Parsha of Terumah. The Tabernacle uses gold, silver and bronze and the Rabbis teach that Avraham is synonymous with Gold, Yitzchak with silver and Jacob with bronze. Rabbi Shimon Schwab explains the nature of each metal reflects the unique contribution and personal achievement of each of our patriarchs. I will explain more at seudah shlishit this week, but suffice it to say, that the Torah is conveying to us a timeless message of the capacity of each person to be a true hero not in the physical realm, but in the realm of the spirit and eternal impact. Gifts to the Needy On Purim Each year, our local Schoke Jewish Family Service helps dozens of people living right here in our own neighborhood who have fallen on hard times. Whether it is a family in need of Shabbat or weekday meals through the Kosher food pantry, or the woman living in her car because she cannot afford the rent on her apartment, Schoke Jewish Family Service is there to help. Many of us are blessed to live in this wonderful community with everything we need, however, there are others who don't have that luxury. One of the reflections of our bonds as a people is how we care for our most vulnerable. One of the prime mitzvot of the upcoming holiday of Purim is gifts to the poor. Every year, we not only disburse Purim funds to needy people in Jerusalem but also to indigent people in our midst. We are grateful to Schoke Jewish Family Service for helping us facilitate this mitzvah locally. Giving to the poor is a mitzvah all year round. However, the mitzvah on Purim is separate even from the general mitzvah of tzedakah (charity). One should give each poor person enough money to provide for at least a meal ($10). She was also a student in Mikveh Israel, the famous historic agricultural school founded in 1870, which taught the first Israelis how to build kibbutzim.
