Shabbat Shalom Monopoly and Mishpatim One of my favorite games as a child was Monopoly. I rarely actually finished the game but enjoyed the strategy, the luck and overall fun. I was caught by surprise and shocked when I learned this week about a new version of Monopoly called Monopoly Cheat. It is likely true that people over the years have tried their hands at cheating but this new version now makes it legal and even encourages it! Hasbro is releasing the game after an in house study revealed that almost half the people break the rules during the game. The new edition includes "cheat cards" asking people to engage in subterfuge. People are encouraged to skip spaces, move an opponents token, add buildings without paying for them and collect rent on another player's property. A person can even steal from the bank. The marketing of a Monopoly Cheaters is a stark reminder of the value and need for the Torah. From time immemorial, God gave us the Torah to serve as a counter cultural force to build a society of righteousness and justice. Avraham, the first Jew, understood that with faith, courage and truth, he could stem the tide of idolatry and lawlessness. He also understood in his iconic words to the leader of the Pelishtim, that he could not trust him because "there is no fear of God in this place." Culture does not insure civilization. There are benefits to the separation of church and state in our country but we are witnessing the consequences of the absence of faith in God. External regulations are not a guarantee of morality and must be coupled with fear of God. The new monopoly Cheaters is only one small manifestation. The recent news stories in Baltimore of cops becoming robbers, Ponzi schemes in the nascent Bitcoin industry, doping scandals in sports, the #metoo movement, cyber bullying and more reflects a corrosive dimension to our society. This week's Parsha of Mishpatim focuses on a robust judicial system and personal responsibility following the revelation at Sinai. The parsha firmly attests to the goal for humanity to pursue justice and righteousness for all mankind. We live in a very blessed age in many respects with the advancement of technology for the betterment of mankind never thought possible. Yet, we must never lose our souls. Whether in private or public, we are accountable to God and must not only respect everyone and their property but work towards modeling a society flowing with honesty, kindness and Godliness. Dr. Secunda is the Jacob Neusner Professor of Judaism at Bard College, where he teaches in the Religion Department. He earned his PhD at Yeshiva University's Bernard Revel Graduate School, and then held posts at Yale and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research focuses on the Talmud and its Iranian context, and Judaism and its interactions with other traditions. His book The Iranian Talmud, has just been released in paperback.

Priority For Who Leads Davening There are numerous customs for someone observing a Yahrzeit. They include learning in a person's memory, reciting kaddish, lighting a candle, reciting brachot in a person's memory and more. One of the questions that arises occurs when a person who is observing wants to be a shaliach tzibur and lead the davening. It is important to note that only a child observing a Yahrzeitfor a parent has an obligation to lead the davening.
