Shabbat Shalom A World of One You may not change the world, but you can change the world of one person. Purim is in our rear view mirrors in time, but must not be in spirit. More than any other holiday, Purim emphasizes the power of one person to make a difference. In the critical juncture in the story, it is Esther's fate to plead with Achashverosh for the safety of her people. She is reticent as the risk of death is great for anyone who enters the king's chambers without permission would be killed. During this moment of truth, Mordechai tells her, "Who knows if for this time you were chosen to be the queen." Perhaps Esther's entire purpose in this position of influence was for this opportunity. She must rise to the occasion. In essence, every encounter with another person can be transformed into an eternal one. There is no meeting that is random. When we are faced with an opportunity to speak up, perform a kind deed, a mitzvah, it is God's way of calling on us to make an impact and make a difference. It is the secret of leading a meaningful life. In the words of Mark Twain, "The two most important days of your life are the day you are born and the day you understand why." God orchestrates many of these moments. It is our sacred task to infuse them with holiness. In his book Spirituality of Imperfection, Ernest Kurtz speaks to this idea. I am grateful to Howard Fogel for recommending this book. He writes, "Past the seeker, as he prayed, came the crippled and the beggar and the beaten. And seeing them, the holy one went down into deep prayer and cried, "Great God, how is it that a loving creator can see such things and yet do nothing about them?" And out of the long silence, God said: "I did do something about them. I created you." We are created to serve God and humanity. We are designed to reveal the light inside of us every day and share it with the world. Each person is a world in and of themselves.
