After six daughters and six weddings, our hearts are overflowing with gratitude to Hashem. There are moments when the blessings in our lives are simply impossible to miss. This was one of them. Under the chuppah, I shared that the two parshiyot surrounding their wedding, Ki Teitzei and Ki Tavo, offer two complementary dimensions of one of life's deepest aspirations: simcha, joy. In Ki Teitzei, the Torah describes the first year of marriage and says, “V'simach et ishto”, bring joy to your wife. Notice that the Torah does not simply say, “Be happy.” It asks us to bring happiness to another person. During the week before the wedding, when Shalhevet and Duniel were not seeing each other, Duniel met me a block from our apartment and handed me an iced coffee for Shalhevet. I asked whether she had requested it. “No,” he said. “I just figured she'd want one.” It was only an iced coffee. But relationships are built from thousands of small moments like that. The little things matter. Keep noticing the people you love. Instead of asking, “What can you do for me?” ask, “What can I do for you?” Ki Tavo offers a second dimension of joy: “V'samachta b'chol hatov asher natan lecha Hashem Elokecha”—rejoice in all the good Hashem has given you. About four weeks into dating, Shalhevet and Duniel were on the Tayelet in Jerusalem when it began pouring. Their plans were washed out, so they decided to board the first bus that came, wherever it was going. They rode around Jerusalem and eventually ended up almost exactly where they started. What stayed with Shalhevet was not that the plans had fallen apart. It was the realization that they could be happy simply being together. That is v'samachta b'chol hatov: learning to recognize the blessing in the life we are actually living rather than waiting for life to unfold exactly as we planned. Perhaps these two parshiyot offer a roadmap not only for marriage, but for all of us: Joy grows when we create it for someone else. Joy deepens when we recognize what we already have. Who can I bring a little more joy to today? What blessing in my life have I stopped noticing? This person is a gift. This moment is a gift. May Shalhevet and Duniel always bring joy to one another and help each other recognize the blessings Hashem has given them. And may all of us learn to do the same, to create joy, notice the good, and bring more of Hashem's light and Presence into the world. Led by Liela Silbiger, a junior at Yeshiva University and lifelong Bnei Akiva leader from Montreal, participants will explore the values of Torah Va'Avodah, develop practical leadership skills, build meaningful relationships with younger children, and learn how to create engaging peulot, Shabbat experiences, and youth programming.
