There Are No Ordinary Moments
Ki Tetzei, Elul, and Learning to See

Parshat Ki Tetzei contains more mitzvot than any other Torah portion. More than ten percent of the Torah’s 613 commandments appear in this one parsha. Yet what is striking is not only how many mitzvot there are, but where we encounter them. Ki Tetzei takes us into marriage and family, business and agriculture, lost objects and helping someone struggling along the road. We encounter a mother bird, a rooftop, a worker in a field, a neighbor in need.

Why? Perhaps because in Judaism, there really are no ordinary moments.

Again and again, the parsha introduces a mitzvah with the word ki,“when.” When you go out. When you build a home. When you encounter something along the road. The Torah is teaching us that holiness is not confined to the synagogue or study hall. God meets us in the “when”, in the unexpected encounter, the mundane decision, the seemingly insignificant moment when we choose how to respond.

During our recent Jewish Heritage Journey through France, we walked in places where Rashi lived and taught nearly a thousand years ago. There was something powerful about studying his ancient words in the very places where he lived. It reminded me that Torah does more than explain a text. Torah teaches us how to see. It trains us to discover eternal meaning in the moments right in front of us.

Returning a lost object becomes more than being helpful. The way we speak becomes more than good manners. A meal, a business interaction, a conversation with someone who needs us—each can become an encounter with eternity.

And so much of life is decided in small moments. We notice someone who could use encouragement. Do we walk by or reach out? We are frustrated with someone we love. Do we react—or choose our words? An unexpected opportunity to help appears. Do we see an interruption—or an invitation?

Sometimes only a few seconds separate instinct from intention. Yet those few seconds can change a relationship, a day, even the direction of a life.

Torah does not only tell us what to do. It teaches us what to notice.

And perhaps that is also the invitation of Elul. During this month we recite Psalm 27 and speak of “lirot b’tuv Hashem”—to see the goodness of God. Elul is a season of learning to see again: to see the blessings we have stopped noticing, the people who need us, the habits that need changing, and, most importantly, the person we still have the capacity to become.

Elul is the month of holy possibility. It asks us not only, “Where have I fallen short?” but “Who might I yet become?”

As we approach a new year, perhaps we do not need to begin with a dramatic resolution. We can begin with one small choice. One conversation handled differently. One person we finally call. A few more minutes devoted to Torah or prayer. One moment in which we pause long enough to choose who we want to be.

That is the invitation of Ki Tetzei and Elul: to see the sacred possibilities hidden within ordinary moments and within ourselves.

There are no insignificant moments. There are only moments whose significance we have not yet learned to see.

And sometimes, seeing the possibility is the first step toward becoming it.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom from Jerusalem and God willing many happy occasions for all of us,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

A Summer Note from Rabbi Cohen
Dear Friends,

Beginning August 3, I am spending much of the month in Israel with our family, celebrating the birth, thank God, of our new granddaughter, Tehillah Rechama, and, God willing, the upcoming wedding of our daughter, Shelhevet, to Duniel. During the month, I will also be leading our Jewish Heritage Journey to France from August 10–17

Although I am away, I remain accessible by WhatsApp and email as needed. At the same time, I know our community is in wonderful hands with Rabbi Roberts, who is here throughout the month and available to assist with any pastoral or communal needs.

Wishing you and your families a wonderful summer and God willing, blessings and good news in the month ahead.
All the best! Rabbi Cohen
