Build Something With It
Sometimes a small detail in Jewish law contains an entire philosophy of life. One of the central mitzvot of Sukkot is taking the arba minim, the four species. Yet the blessing we recite is not al netilat arba minim, but specifically “al netilat lulav.” The Talmud asks why. Its answer: “Ho’il v’gavoha mikulan”—because the lulav is the tallest of them all. When the Talmud challenges that answer, it clarifies that the date palm itself is the tallest of the species (Sukkah 37b). Rabbi Shmuel Bornsztain, the Sochatchover Rebbe, in his classic Shem MiShmuel, sees something deeper in the image of the lulav reaching upward. The spiritual journey that began on Rosh Hashanah and intensified through Yom Kippur is not supposed to end when the fast is over. Sukkot is about bringing Yom Kippur home with us. It is one thing to feel close to God while fasting and praying. It is another to bring that holiness into our homes, our relationships, the way we treat another person, and the choices we make every day. Perhaps that is why, almost immediately after Yom Kippur, we begin building the sukkah. We have spent an entire day thinking about the people we hope to become. And then Judaism says: Now build something. The lulav reaches upward toward heaven, but we hold it here on earth. That is our mission as well: to take the inspiration we experienced during the Yamim Noraim and bring it down into the world. Judaism is not only about reaching toward heaven. It is about bringing a little bit of heaven to earth. And perhaps that is the challenge of Sukkot: What can I do over these eight days to lift the world around me just a little higher? I look forward to exploring that question together on the first day of Sukkot—and to introducing a special eight-day challenge for our community that I hope will help us turn inspiration into action. On a personal note, Diane and I are thrilled to welcome our new son-in-law, Duniel Shapiro, into our family following his recent marriage to our daughter Shalhevet. Preparing Your Sukkah for the Forecasted Storm
With significant rain and strong winds in the forecast, please take time before Yom Tov to make sure your sukkah is safe and secure.
- Make sure the sukkah walls and frame are firmly secured.
- Schach should be able to withstand an ordinary wind. If it already meets that standard, plastic zip ties may be added for extra protection against unusually strong winds.
- If there is a realistic concern that your sukkah could become airborne or pose a danger to people or property, please err on the side of safety.
- If your sukkah falls or is damaged on Yom Tov, do not rebuild it yourself. It may be repaired or rebuilt on Chol HaMoed.
- If you will be away for the first days, you may wait until Chol HaMoed to put up your sukkah or schach given the weather concerns.

What Will I Carry Forward?
Yom Kippur has ended, but its work has not. On Yom Kippur, I shared a sermon entitled “What Will I Carry Forward?” At its heart is the remarkable story of Yudi and Chumi Herzberg and their beloved eight-year-old daughter, Charlotte, of blessed memory.
In the face of unimaginable loss, they made an extraordinary choice. They could not change what had happened, nor would they ever stop carrying Charlotte's memory and love. But they refused to allow one tragedy to produce another. They chose healing over blame and love over bitterness.
Their story leaves each of us with a question worth carrying beyond Yom Kippur: What am I still carrying that I no longer need to carry in the same way?
Perhaps there is someone we need to call, an apology we need to offer, a conversation we have postponed, or a burden we are finally ready to put down. And perhaps there is a “Scene Two”—another opportunity to respond differently than we have before.
As we move from Yom Kippur into Sukkot, we are reminded that the goal of the Yamim Noraim is not simply to experience moments of inspiration, but to carry them forward into the way we live.

Yudi and Chumi will carry Charlotte's memory and love forever. What they refused to carry was the hatred and blame that could have compounded their tragedy. We do not let go because the past did not matter. We let go because the future matters too.
