For This You Were Chosen

More than any other time during the year, the days between Pesach and Shavuot evoke a sense of our generation's role in the arc of Jewish history. We are living in extraordinary times.

Within one week, we commemorate Holocaust remembrance day and Israel Memorial Day and celebrate 77 years since the founding of the State of Israel. We hear stories of survivors, the tragedies and triumphs. In the next few days, we remember the soldiers who died fighting for Israel, the blessings of Israel as a haven for our people and a beacon of light unto the world. We are living at a historic crossroads we never could have imagined over 100 years ago.

We live in Stamford, CT in 2026. Not by fate but by design. Yet, all of our lives are intertwined with the events of Jewish history. My grandparents all immigrated to the United States in the early 20th century. I was born in America in 1967 a few months after the Six Day War when God returned our people to Jerusalem after 2000 years. I lived in Israel during the Ethiopian Jewry immigration, witnessed Natan Sharanksy arrive at Ben Gurion Airport, and sat in a sealed room wearing a gas mask during the Gulf War.

We all are born into a time for a reason and with a purpose.

In this season of mourning and joy, I am reminded of the immortal words of Moses to Aaron in this week’s Torah portion of Shmini. The Torah states that Moshe tells Aaron as the Mishkan is about to be operational, “Draw close to the altar.” The Midrash as quoted by Rashi explains that Aaron felt unworthy to serve in the Tabernacle. After all, he was somewhat responsible for the sin of the Golden Calf.

Moses tells Aaron: Why are you ashamed? You are forgiven. For this role (in the Tabernacle) you are chosen. In other words, if God calls on you at this time to serve, you are obligated to respond. God believes in you. Now is your time.

We live in a world often unhinged. There is much we can lament. However, every moment we do is a moment lost to increase the light. We are all born in this generation, in the footsteps of the Messiah for a Divine purpose and to do whatever we can to hasten a world of full redemption.

We all benefit from the historic gesture by God to restore our people to the land of Israel. For this generation, we are chosen. We are living in challenging times but historic as well and are in the midst of writing another chapter in Jewish history. In the days ahead, as we commemorate Yom Hashoah and Yom Hazkiron and celebrate Yom Haatzmaut, we pray for peace in Israel, the safety of American and Israeli soldiers and the world, but also to deepen our roles in rising to this moment and serve God, the Jewish people, the State of Israel and the world and hasten a brighter and better day.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and God willing and full redemption speedily and in our days,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen
