A Moment of Gratitude, Memory, and Healing This week, with heavy hearts and deep gratitude to God, the Jewish people marked the return of Ran Gvili to Israel. After 843 agonizing days, an excruciating chapter in our shared history has come to a close. For more than two years, across borders, backgrounds, and beliefs, our people prayed, protested, hoped, and held fast to a single promise: until the last hostage is home. That sacred commitment has now been fulfilled. It is a moment both heartbreaking and holy, one of the happiest and saddest moments we have known. Our hearts embrace Ran's family, Talik and Itzik, with love and compassion. We hold them close, and we hold the entire people of Israel close, united in grief, gratitude, and resilience. As President Herzog said, this is the moment we have been waiting for and the moment when a nation can slowly begin to heal. From the outset at CAS, we said that when the final hostage returned, we would take our next step forward together. In that spirit, we will conclude our communal recitation of Hatikvah and take down the Israeli banners that have surrounded us during this long vigil. This change does not diminish our unwavering love, solidarity, and support for Israel, which are eternal and unshakable, and which are represented by so much more than flags and anthems. And of course, there will be times in the future, like at our annual Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha'atzmaut observances, when we will once again decorate our sanctuary and recite Hatikvah together to honor Israel. But this is a moment of transition: from waiting to healing, from anguish to rebuilding, from protest to renewed purpose. In gratitude to God, we encourage the community to recite Psalm 100, Mizmor LeTodah, a prayer of thanksgiving that even in brokenness, we acknowledge God's presence and goodness. May Ran's memory be a blessing. May his return bring comfort to his family, strength to our people, and a renewed commitment to life, unity, and hope. With blessings, wishes for a Shabbat Shalom and the full light of the redemption, Rabbi Daniel Cohen, Senior Rabbi Rabbi Aryeh Roberts, Assistant Rabbi Robert Hoff, President, Agudath Sholom |
Agudath Sholom Annual Dinner Sunday evening, March 15th, 2026 Lives That Uplift. Impact That Endures. שַׁלַּח לַחְמְךָ עַל־פְּנֵי הַמָּיִם כִּי בְרֹב הַיָּמִים תִּמְצָאֶנּוּ Cast your bread upon the waters; trust that its impact will endure. Ecclesiastes 11:1
In the words of King Solomon, we are called to cast our kindness into the world without expectation of return—a way of living that most fully reflects the divine image within us, sending ripples of blessing far beyond the moment. This evening celebrates faithful presence and steady commitment, through which mitzvot are lived and community is sustained. We honor individuals whose devotion is transformative and whose impact endures.

Trees written by World War One soldier-poet, Joyce Kilmer, expresses the writer's awe as he ponders the divine origin of trees. I have begun discussions following guidance from Rabbi Melman, who supervises Insomnia Cookies locations in the NYC area to explore whether the Stamford store could potentially be considered for supervision by the Vaad Hakashrut of Fairfield County, with the support of Beldottis. At this time, the store is not kosher certified. Updates will be shared as conversations continue, God willing.
