New Beginnings: Ayeka

I hope everyone had a meaningful, joyous and uplifting holiday season. God willing, we will all share many blessings together in the year ahead. Thank God, our Shul offers many gateways for learning and I urge everyone to spend a few minutes looking at the offerings and commit to at least one new initiative. Torah is truly the pause that refreshes!

There were many highlights of the season but I want to focus on one from Simchat Torah that underscores an important message in the Parsha. It is the first question God asks humanity. After Adam and Eve eat from the tree of knowledge, God asks them, "Where are you?" Ayeka.

Why did God ask? Of course, God knows their location. He knows where they are hiding. If so, what is the purpose of his query?

I will suggest one answer but there are many. Pose the question at your Shabbat table. What do you think? What sources comment on this fundamental theological dilemma? Where else in the Torah do we find the same word? What is the connection to Ayeka in our Torah portion?

The Slonimer Rebbe and others suggest that Ayeka is not a question for God but humanity. It is a wake up call for self reflection. Where are we? Are we realizing our Divine purpose? Rather than meander through daily life, it is a call from God to live on a higher plane with renewed purpose.

We were blessed to receive the news of the return of the living hostages right before the last days of the holiday. Yet, we continue to pray for the return of all of those hostages whose bodies have not yet been buried to enable their souls to be at peace. As I shared on Shmini Atzeret, we are very much in the footsteps towards a world of redemption and each one of us plays a vital role in enabling the time to become a reality.

God willing, if we are attuned to the personal call of God, Ayeka and we can answer Hineini - Here we are, we will experience a time of full peace and security for Israel and God's light all over the world.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Supporting IDF Widows and Orphans  Thank you to everyone who made a pledge over the last days of the holiday to support - https://www.idfwo.org/en/. Consider a donation to support widows and orphans of the IDF. Our hearts are open to the joy for the families of the returned hostages and the pain of those families who lost loved ones over the past two years. God willing we will share more light in unity in the season ahead.
Coat Room Cleanout  Any items left in the CAS coat room have been moved to the hanging racks outside the door. Please take a look for your lost items. Any items left after November 1st will be donated.
