Values are Caught and Taught: the Making of a Mensch John Donne, wrote, "No man is an island." We are all on stage and interconnected to each other. What we do, what we say and how we behave are not private, but public and impact our families and community. Our actions may not be posted on the front pages of the newspaper or in the headlines on social media but they endure. The parsha of Ki Tzeze begins with the episode of the rebellious child, but intuitively speaks in totality to the impact of walking in God's ways every day. Every interaction reverberates in our homes, our children and community. What memories did your parents forge in your consciousness that shaped who you are today? I reconnected with a good friend Tamir Goodman this summer. In speaking a number of years ago with him, known as the "Jewish Jordan", about his commitment to observe the Sabbath and maintain his religious principles while playing NCAA Division I basketball, I gained new insight into the power of memories we create in small but significant ways. He shared the following; "When I was about eight years old, I hit the game winning shot in a local recreational league. I was just so excited because basketball meant everything to me. I was pumping my arms in the air as if I was the greatest player. When I got back in the car, my father told me words I will never forget. 'I'm very proud of you, you played well, you hit the game winning shot, but a Jewish person never reacts like that.' Never react as if your talents are coming because of your own hard work. You need to remember that your talent and basketball is a gift." When I asked Goodman the source of his strength to follow his faith and not the allure of the national stage of basketball, he shared, "I remember going into court with my father and seeing him wearing a kippah in court. All the Jewish lawyers there could see how proud he was of his faith. He always focused on what was important in life. He never put an emphasis on materialistic things. Things that were important to him were religion, his family, and helping others. He made everyone feel good. He was always there for us. No matter what was going on, no matter how busy, no matter what kind of case he was involved in, he had a big firm, but if we needed anything, he was there in a second. Those are the things that I'll always remember about him." Tamir's father understood one of the most important dimensions of creating memories and instilling enduring values. To educate is not to capture but to captivate. Engaging the mind is not nearly as important as captivating the heart. Our children learn from what we do more than what we say. In this spirit, join me for a new monthly lunch and learn on Parenting with Purpose. Details are on the way. Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and God willing news of full redemption speedily and in our days, Rabbi Daniel Cohen |
