The Names on the Beams The Levites transported the Tabernacle in the desert. Within the tribe of Levi, three families bore this sacred responsibility. The family of Kehat carried the vessels such as the ark and the menorah. The family of Gershon carried the screens and curtains, the exterior of the Mishkan. Finally, the family of Merari carried the sockets and the beams. Yet, when describing their tasks, God alerts Moshe that it is only within the family of Merari that specific people were designated for each beam and socket. The Torah states in Chapter 4, Verse 32, "You shall appoint by name to the utensils they carry on their watch. " Why was their designation unique? Why was it required to attach a name to each beam? Rabbi Shimon Schwab (1908-1995), the leader of the German Jewish community in Washington Heights (KAJ) explains the rationale. He writes that the family of Kehat who carried the vessels symbolizes those who learn Torah. The family of Gershon who carried the material for the sides and roof of the Mishkan symbolize those who observe Torah. The family of Merari who carried the beams and sockets, without which the Tabernacle would fall, represent the supporters of Torah. Lest Merari think that their role is any less important than the other two families, God insisted that their names be connected to the beams themselves. As Ethics of our Fathers states, "If there is no flour, there is no Torah". In other words, we all have critical roles in building the future of the Jewish people. No person is more or less important. For instance, the tribe of Zebulon were merchants, trades people, whose businesses supported the tribe of Issachar who studied Torah. Moshe blesses them first prior to the tribe of Issachar in his final words to the Jewish people to empathize the primacy of their role. What does this idea signify for us? We all count. God is counting on all of us. Whether studying Torah or financially supporting Torah, all of our contributions are holy and meaningful. In the months ahead, as we plan the completion of our own capital campaign, reflect on your contribution to sustaining our future. Whether the beams, sockets, walls, vessels or more, we are all called upon to make a contribution from the heart. God willing, when we do, when we are united in our mission and honor everyone's contributions, we will be blessed with God's presence and our community and synagogue will, God willing, grow now and for many years to come. - Mitzvah Opportunity in solidarity with Hadar Knoller Almost a year ago, a unit in Gaza was involved in an explosion which resulted in the death of two soldiers. One of the soldiers, Nadav Knoller, was married with a baby boy. His wife Hadar, came to Stamford a number of years ago as a BCHA Bat Sheirut and lived in the community being involved and part of the Stamford Jewish family. In memory of the two soldiers, a campaign to raise money for a Hatzala motorbike is happening and to show our support and solidarity to Hadar and that we still appreciate her having been here, we have been asked to take part in this campaign and help them reach their target.
