Be Holy Every Day One of the most ambiguous, yet significant, directives in the Torah is to be holy. Kedoshim Teheyu. The intent of this mitzvah is the subject of great debate. Rashi comments that God is mandating separation from transgression. Nachmanides explains that God is requiring us to sanctify our life through the commandments. It is not enough to observe the Torah, but our behavior should be reflective of a spiritually motivated life. We can consume kosher food, but if we do not eat with dignity and in moderation, we are diminishing our holiness. However, the mitzvah of being holy also asks us to bear in mind the transcendent nature of our role as Jews. Prior to receiving the Torah at Mt. Sinai, God called on us to be a holy nation. This characterization calls on us in the broadest sense to seize every day to make a difference and embody our mission as Jews. Are we living holy lives? Do we allow the days to fade away or harness every moment for impact? Motivation and energy flow when we view every day as an answer to a call. When God asked Adam and Eve, "Where are you?" it was a call of intentionality and purpose. It's the difference between being a thermometer or a thermostat. Both register the temperature, but one is influenced by the environment, and the other transforms the environment. Are we thermometers or thermostats? Do we stay focused on shining light every day or do we get distracted? We're ultimately answerable to God and our inner spark and consciousness. Do we do our best every day? In his book, The Call: Finding and Fulfilling the Central Purpose of Your Life, Os Guinness writes that God planted a spiritual gyroscope deep inside our hearts. Every day we are called upon to be so enthralled with a vision of God that, "Before others we have nothing to prove, nothing to gain, nothing whatsoever to lose." Leading a holy life reflects an unwavering commitment to serving God with reverence and humility and awakening every day with a renewed sense of purpose to amplify God's light. We pray for God's help on our sacred mission. In the timeless words of King David, "The Lord remains near to all who call out to him, to everyone who calls out to him sincerely." Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom, the immediate return of the hostages, and God willing a full redemption speedily and in our days Rabbi Daniel Cohen |

Our study will be accompanied by a delightful bagel brunch. If you plan to attend in person or would like me to send the links to the first two sessions, please contact me at rj@richardjschwartz.com.
