Shabbat Shalom

We are pleased to welcome Rav Boaz Mori as our Scholar in Residence this Shabbat. We welcome his wife Liora and their children - Shira, Tiferet, Aviel and Yedidya. Rav Boaz serves as the Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Lev Hatorah in Ramat Beit Shemesh. He will speak Friday night after Kabbalat Shabbat, teach at the 10:30 AM shiur and for a brief 20 minute shiur 30 minutes after the 9 AM kiddush, pre-mincha and during seudah shlishit.

Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support of the Speter family. There are more details below and we hope that God willing, Carmiya has a full and speedy recovery.

More than almost any Parsha in the Torah, Matot speaks to the relationship between Jews living in the Diaspora and in Israel. Moshe sets the tone for all generations by demanding of the tribes who will live outside of Israel, Reuven, Gad and half of Menashe that they become pioneers, chalutzim for Israel. The tribes respond by committing that they will not rest until their brothers and sisters in Israel are secure and settled.

If we choose to live outside of Israel, we must still join in the destiny of the Jewish people in Israel. We are obligated to muster our resources to offer support in any way we can. Last week, while in Israel, I had the opportunity to visit the Michael Levin Base for Lone Soldiers and Bnot Sherut. It was very moving and a meaningful way to express solidarity with some of our members who have chosen to serve in the IDF and thousands others. To learn more, click here. Our shul is a beacon for the the bonds between Diaspora and Israel and God willing, we will deepen our commitment in many ways in the years ahead.

This Shabbat, we wish tzetchem leshalom to Edmundo and Beth Munguia and their family who are making aliyah. We are proud of them and wish them and their children many blessings on their move and in their new home.

Finally, we began the Nine Days of mourning on Thursday night. As a reminder, restrictions include, most notably, no consumption of meat and wine (with the exception of on Shabbat and at a siyum) and no live music, nail cutting and haircuts. We also refrain from recreational swimming. You are invited to join me on Wednesday at 613 at 5:45 PM for a siyum I will be leading on the Tractate of Megillah.

God willing, as we mourn the loss of the Beit Hamikdash - the Temple in Jerusalem - we will merit to see a time of joy, rebuilding and peace very soon.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Prayer and Support for one of our Youngest Members

We believe in the power of prayer and community. Unfortunately, one of our youngest members - Carmiya Speter, daughter of Shaya and Jennie Speter - was diagnosed with throat cancer and is at Yale hospital. She is five years old.

First, please keep her in your prayers - Carmiya Chaya Hadas, Bas Tziporah Miriam. We will be reciting Psalm 121 for her at the morning and evening services. There is a Tehililm group set up as well for recitation of Psalms.

If you would like to be added to the Tehillim group, here is the WhatsApp link. Please keep Carmiya in your prayers each day. God willing, she will have a full and speedy recovery.

Second, there is a community WhatsApp group "Speter Friends" set up to assist Shaya and Jennie during the months ahead. If you would like to be added to the Speter group, email tzivia.moreen@gmail.com or Yonnie Rubenfeld at jason.rubinfeld23@gmail.com.

Finally, the Speter Family will need extra financial support during the months ahead. If you are interested in assisting, please be in touch directly with Rabbi Cohen.

When we pray for healing, it is both the body and the soul. Our prayers and community support truly make a difference for Carmiya and her family. God willing, we will share happy occasions with their family in the future.

(If there is a child who has reached the age of chinuch, we give him the wine to drink, since it is generally forbidden to consume wine and meat during the Nine Days. If there is no child, the one who makes Havdalah may drink the wine himself.)
