Decisions of Destiny Below is an excerpt of a message I shared at the memorial service at BCHA for Mr. Walter Shuchatowitz, founding dean. It is always important for us to express gratitude for the legacy we are gifted and our shared obligation to perpetuate it for the future. Tonight, I want to focus on one dimension of his life which in my mind is the secret to his enduring impact. Mr. S lived each day not for the here and now, but for eternity. He understood more than most that small decisions and gestures of kindness reverberate forever. God offers the greatest of honors to a person who lives for eternity, lives for impact. When Miriam was a young girl, the Torah states she waited to see what would happen to her brother Moshe, who was sent down the Nile to avoid a certain death at the hands of the Egyptians. Over 80 years later, God repays her. When she is plagued with leprosy, the entire nation of Israel waits until she can reenter the camp, because as Rashi states, the one Shaah, the one moment, she waited for Moshe. One decision, one gesture of kindness is never forgotten. As the Rabbi of Agudath Sholom, I can say that both Mr. S and Rabbi Ehrenkranz, who came to Stamford in the 1940s, understood that their presence in Stamford was a divine opportunity to plant seeds for the future of the Jewish people. It was not easy to build a shul or build a day school, but that did not dissuade them from being driven each day to create impact. Mr. S was legendary for his tireless devotion to ensuring a Jewish education for our youth, for creating experiences of a lifetime in Israel, and building a premier Jewish day schools. He was filled with enthusiasm every day to plant another seed, and ignite another soul because he knew that if he woke up in the morning, it was God telling him that he had faith in him to make an eternal difference. So many stories. So many families forever changed due to Mr. S. Mr. S lives on and his spirit will forever be a blessing because he lived for eternity. His decision to forgo a career in law for Torah changed history. His decision to educate and inspire every Jewish child shapes generations. His presence will always be felt. I experienced a sign in the early morning on the day of his funeral in Boston. We stopped at the Starbucks on High Ridge early in the morning and spotted a car parked outside with the license "Dr. S", itself odd. When we went inside, there was one customer, Dr. Carl Scheraga, son of Mort Scheraga, of blessed memory, who was Mr. S's right hand man, serving as president of BCHA for over 20 years. We who are here today are tasked with carrying on Mr. S's legacy and the sacred responsibility and privilege to perpetuate and grow the presence of Torah and Jewish learning in our community each and every day. Rabbi Avi Weiss Scholar In Residence Weekend
Shabbat, March 7
Rabbi Weiss will deliver the Shabbat morning sermon, speak at a community luncheon following Kiddush and during Seudah Shlishit. The weekend will be focused on the recent 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, rising antisemitism, lessons from the movement to free Soviet Jews for which he was a champion, emerging from his personal experiences and lifetime commitment to spiritual activism. |

Opening The Conversation: Creating A Supportive Community Around Infertility And Pregnancy Loss

The Steinmetz Bernstein Alexander Yoetzet Initiative at CAS for the Stamford Community presents "Opening the Conversation: Creating A Supportive Community Around Infertility and Pregnancy Loss." This event will include Keynote Speaker Abbie Sophia sharing her own journey, followed by a panel discussion featuring clinical psychologist Dr. Danielle Thau, Reproductive Endocrinologist Dr. Ilana Ressler and Reva Judas, founder of Nechama Comfort. The panel discussion will focus on raising awareness of these issues as well as giving tools and strategies for being supportive as friends, family and a community at large. Registration at 7:30 pm followed by program at 8 pm. Open to the entire community. |

- JR YACHAD HOUSING NEEDED Shabbat Feb. 7-8. Junior Yachad will once again be coming to Stamford! Volunteers are needed for housing. All Yachad members are matched up with a staff member who will be responsible for them. The kids have varying degrees of abilities and disabilities including a wide range of developmental and learning disabilities, such as Down Syndrome, Autism, Asperger's and cerebral palsy, in general they are mild mannered. They can stay in either separate bedrooms or the same. There might be one or two girls in a wheelchair. Only breakfast needs to be provided by the host family. They will be out of the house Friday night for dinner and pretty much all day shabbas. Include your address, how many you can sleep, whether you have stairs and phone number in your response. - DOR L'DOR UPDATE - Join us on Shabbat, Feb. 15th for a Meet and Greet during Kiddush to learn more and forge new friendships! This program seeks to build upon the multigenerational aspect of our community by linking young families and seniors. Together, youth and seniors will build a mutual relationship, with young families offering a helping hand or caring phone call a few times a year, and with seniors in turn offering their wisdom, perspective, and encouragement to young families. - PAY IT FORWARD! As our community grows it takes even more effort to insure the warmth of our shul. You may not realize but we have a Hospitality Team who are informed of new families who moved into community. Team members are expected to invite new families to any of the following: shabbat meal, BBQ, brunch, even coffee, a get-together in the park, or a community-wide function. - CAS FREE MEZUZAH CAMPAIGN IN FAIRFIELD COUNTY, CT Bringing Blessings to Jewish Homes. Do you know a neighbor or a friend who lacks a mezuzah?
