The Spirit of the Three Weeks and Nine Days

The period of the three weeks marking the siege on Jerusalem and destruction of the Temples begins this Sunday, July 21st, with the fast of the 17th of Tamuz. These days are not meant to be commemorations of cataclysmic historical events, but are intended to awaken within us the awareness that if not for our actions, we would have seen the Temple rebuilt and peace on earth. It is easy to divert our attention from our responsibility for the chaos today but Judaism teaches that change starts with me and you.

The mourning practices are designed to intensify the sense of loss as we approach the 9th of Av and propel us to act differently and step up spiritually. One important way would be to exercise extra care with our words, posts, emails and texts. Words possess the power of life and death. The Temple was destroyed due to abuse of speech and can only be rebuilt when we harness speech for life, hope and healing.

In brief, the practices include, but are not limited to, no live music, joyous social gatherings, haircuts, or weddings during the three week period. The mourning increases during the Nine Days on the first of Av, Thursday evening, August 1st. The prohibitions include no meat or wine (with the exclusion of Shabbat or at a siyum), recreational swimming and purchasing of new clothes or items requiring a blessing of Shehechiyanu.

You may learn more online by visiting or feel free to reach out to me or Rabbi Zweiter for specific questions. The fast on Sunday begins at 4:27 AM and ends at 8:56 PM. Please drink a lot over the weekend as it is very hot and always remember that one's health is primary.

God wiling, in the weeks ahead, we will not only mourn the loss of the Beit Hamikdash, but be inspired to harness our collective awareness to create a world of redemption and merit to see peace and the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem speedily and in our days.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and an easy and meaningful fast,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen
