Rainbow Living: Walk with God

Learn the message of the rainbow. It is one of the most powerful symbols in the Torah and expresses God's covenant of peace with humanity. Why a rainbow? What is the significance of the variety of colors?

The mystics explain that the colors of the rainbow are representations of God's middot (attributes). The rainbow is the symbol of God's promise not to bring another flood, for by reflecting on and emulating God's attributes, we ensure that another flood will not be necessary.

Character counts. The foundation of Torah is being a mensch and walking in the ways of God in all we do. The rainbow is a timely reminder of the values we should embody and model. Patience, Order, Gratitude, Kindness, Forgiveness. The opportunities are everywhere.

When we walk into shul, do we hold the door for the person behind us?

When we see food on the floor, do we pick it up or walk by?

Do we model the ethics of derech eretz by helping our Chris or Mark keep a clean and orderly shul, simcha room and social hall?

Do we run to "Kiddush" or wait to hear Kiddush and walk slowly to the room?

Do we pause to thank God with a bracha before we eat food as consuming without a blessing is tantamount to stealing from God.

Rabbi Chaim Vital explains that middot were not enumerated in the Torah among the commandments because they are the very foundation of all commandments and the Torah itself. One who lacks proper character is deficient in the very essence of humanity.

Noah was criticized because he did not teach the people to know God through contemplation of His middot and to walk in His ways. He failed to correct and develop the people's character traits. Hence, he was unsuccessful.

However, God chooses Avraham as the progenitor of the Jewish people: "For I know that he will command his children and household after him that they will keep God's way, doing charity and justice." (Genesis 18:19).

God knew that Abraham would direct his descendants in derech Hashem - the path of attributes that leads to a life of Torah.

Emulate the colors in the rainbow. Walk in God's ways. Model a life of Derech Eretz.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen
