Moments of Truth
At our first board meeting of the year, we asked our members about their hopes for the coming year. What are your priorities and where would you like to devote your time? The answers were inspiring! Whether in God, Torah, Chesed, welcoming, fiscal health and, God willing, the renovation and expansion of our shul, we are are all excited about the continuing growth of CAS.
We are blessed with an outstanding group of devoted, motivated and talented leaders in our shul and each one expressed their commitment to harnessing their talents for the benefit of our shul. When I was asked the question, I reflected on our shul as a community of connection. When we share our sorrows, we diminish our pain and when we share our celebrations, we increase our joy.
This is the gift and mission of our shul. Jan Carlzon, the former CEO of SAS airlines, calls these opportunities "moments of truth." It could be as little as a 15 second interaction between one person and a member of the shul or our staff, on a Shabbat morning, a weekday, or around town which defines a sense of connection and warmth. These moments of truth can be transformed into positive and eternal ones with lasting impact.
I ask everyone to seize these moments of truth. When a new person moves to town, welcome them. When you hear of someone in need, let us know. I want to remind you of two critical initiatives fundamental to our mission, our hospitality and healing initiatives. (Info is below)
In the smallest of moments, we can provide a haven for a person who is bereft, comfort for the bereaved, meaning in people's lives when feeling adrift and deeper happiness in times of joy. Our world is increasingly impersonal and virtual, but we have the privilege as members of CAS to create and deepen connection and community.
As we approach Tisha B'Av, we must remember the Talmudic statement that one who mourns for Jerusalem will merit to see its rebuilding. We mourn with the Salomon family in Israel and must do our utmost to stand together with people in Israel and in our community in times of distress and God willing, in this merit, we will share many semachot together and in the rebuilding of the Temple in peace and joy speedily in our days.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and an easy and meaningful fast.
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
