Leading a Godly Life: In Memory of Joe Gold

What does it mean to lead a Godly life?

In this week's Torah portion of Emor, God commands us to sanctify His name. Yet, the word for sanctification, kadosh, is written in the passive form and not the active one. Rabbi Nissan Alpert explains that a person can only muster the courage to God forbid, give up one's life for God, if one has lived for God every day. The greatest sanctification of God's name is not how we die but how we live. It is a reflection of a daily devotion. What do we do every day to amplify God's glory in the world?

A week ago, I was reminded of man who lived for God. Joe Gold, of blessed memory, was the first recipient of our annual Chai award. He was named as a baby at Agudath Sholom and died as a proud member 98 years later. Last Friday, his son, Jerry, donated the proceeds of the sale of Joe's violin, to the synagogue. In my mind, it represented the music Joe brought to his life and our community. God willing, we will create a special memorial in the new reconstruction to capture Joe's spirit and love for Agudath Sholom.

Many years ago, when I visited Joe, on one of my winter trips to Florida, he shared with me what I consider to be the secret to his longevity. It is lesson for each of us. He lived with an awareness and urgency to appreciate the gift of life and make the most of every day. He shared with me how he does it. "Every day, Rabbi," he said with his big smile - "I am sure to do two things. I play my violin and lay my Tefillin." He sought to bring song to the world and deepen his relationship to G-d every day.

One of the most inspiring moments of my rabbinate was when Joe played his violin as his way of accepting the Chai award. We gave him a rousing standing ovation. We all felt the energy in the room. Numerous people came to me that night and said they felt the presence of God. Joe's love of his family, his friends, his music and his faith all merged into a deeply spiritual frequency I will and many will never forget. His soul soared.

God willing, Joe's song will always be in our hearts as a way to inspire us to lead holy lives. May his memory always be a source of blessing.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Thank you

  • We are very grateful to the family of Joe Gold for donating the proceeds of the sale of his violin to Agudath Sholom. We will create a special memorial in the new reconstruction to capture Joe's song, spirit and love for our shul.

Message from the President about the CAS Boxwood Drive Entry

Over the past several weeks, I have received various comments and concerns from our neighbors and users of the gate at the CAS Boxwood Drive Entry. As you know, we want to maintain a good relationship with all our neighbors, while balancing the needs of our members and their guests. With that goal in mind, please be aware of the following:

  • We plan to continue our policy of locking the gate except on Shabbat and holidays. If you need to use the gate during the week to gain access, CAS members can get the entry code by calling the office.
  • On Shabbat and holidays, the gate will no longer be able to be locked. After the end of Shabbat or holidays, we will re-enable the lock. We have worked to keep the gate in good working condition and alignment.
  • When you use the gate, please close it (gently). If it is locked, please re-lock it after use.

Thanks for your help in this matter,
Dr. Stuart Waldstreicher
President
