Shabbat Shalom/Chag Sameach

The Seder night is a night of Questions. It is a conversation between generations. Here are Seven Seder Questions for Reflection.

  1. The Jews who maintained their Jewish identity merited salvation including preserving their names.  How do you insure your Jewish identity inside and outside your home? What is your Hebrew name? Why were you given this name? How does the meaning inspire you?
  2. The story of the redemption expresses our gratitude to G-d for our salvation as a nation and as individuals. When have you experienced the "hand of G-d" this past year?
  3. Ironically, the marror, the symbol of bitterness, is listed in Rabban Gamliel's teaching following the Paschal Lamb and the Matzah. It would seem the marror should be the first for slavery presences freedom. What do you think is the relevant message of the Marror following the Matzah?
  4. Did Jews in persecution during Pesach such as during the Spanish expulsion, pogroms, or the Shoah have an obligation to celebrate freedom? Why? How could they experience it?
  5. We may be physically free but are we spiritually enslaved?  How? Spiritual freedom is the capacity to express the inner most essence of our soul's deepest desires. One who observes the Torah is free.  How can you become free?
  6. Share a powerful Seder memory from your childhood. Why do you think it stayed with you?  How are you creating new memories this year?
  7. The two names for Pesach are the holiday of Matzot and holiday of Pesach. The first name reflects our faith in God. The second name reflects God's faith in us. We are born and chosen to glorify His name every day. Are we and how can we rededicate our lives to this holy and noble mission? How does this idea resonate in your personal and professional life and in support of the people and the state of Israel?
Wishing you and your entire family a Shabbat Shalom and Chag Kasher VeSameach!
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
