A Mezuzah Moment

The source of the mitzvah of placing a mezuzah on our doorposts is based on the events in this week's Torah portion of Bo. What is the significance of this symbol? In classic fashion, we can answer this question by asking another one.

Why did God require the Jewish people to risk their lives by placing the blood of the Egyptian god on their homes? If the goal was to insure that the angel of death passed over the Jewish homes, would not God who is omniscient know the identity of who is inside?

Herein lies the timeless message of the mezuzah. This historic act was intended not for God's sake but for ours. When we place a mezuzah on our doorposts we are demonstrating the depth of our faith. Do we hide our Jewish identity or do we proclaim it with pride? Do we wait for redemption or do we partner with God in bringing it?

I was reminded of this lesson in two ways this past week. I met with a young man who wears the symbol of the mezuzah. He is on a campus with few Jews but it is his way of affirming his identity. I also had the privilege of visiting a home and putting up a few mezuzot. It was a teachable moment as we shared the meaning of the first mezuzah in history and its relevance for us today.

The mezuzot on our doors and inside our homes are a timeless symbol of our unwavering commitment to our heritage. A few years ago, we launched a Mezuzah project to provide a free mezuzah to any Jewish home in need. For more information, watch or contact me directly. Thank you for your partnership sharing this important mitzvah.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom
