Celebrating the Journey

One of the most important questions in our relationship with God is this: Do we celebrate only when we arrive at our destination, or do we learn to celebrate the journey along the way?

We live in a world that often measures success by outcomes. We celebrate the graduation, the promotion, the completed project, the championship victory. Yet Judaism teaches that spiritual growth requires us to recognize not only the destination but also the steps that lead us there.

This idea emerges in a striking way in this week's parashah.

The Torah teaches that upon entering the Land of Israel, the Jewish people would become obligated in the mitzvah of challah—separating a portion of dough and giving it to the Kohen. Rav Moshe Feinstein notes that this obligation begins immediately upon entering the land. By contrast, other agricultural gifts, such as terumot and ma'asrot, become obligatory only after the land has been conquered, settled, and the produce is fully grown and ready for use.

Why the difference?

Rav Moshe explains that the mitzvah of challah reflects a unique spiritual lesson. When it comes to grain and produce, the obligation begins only when the process is complete. The fruit has ripened. The harvest is ready. The destination has been reached.

But challah is different. The obligation arises while the process is still unfolding. At that point, there is only flour and water. The bread has not yet emerged. The final product is still uncertain. Yet that is precisely when the Torah asks us to pause, recognize God's blessing, and sanctify the moment.

The message is profound. There are times when we should celebrate completion and achievement. We should thank God when a dream is realized, a challenge is overcome, or a goal is reached. But Judaism also teaches us to recognize the holiness of beginnings, the value of small steps, and the significance of progress that is still incomplete.

Many of life's most meaningful pursuits unfold slowly. Building a family, strengthening a marriage, growing in faith, recovering from hardship, developing character, deepening friendships, or pursuing a worthy dream all require patience. Often we become discouraged because we focus only on how far we still have to go. We forget to appreciate how far we have already come.

The mitzvah of challah reminds us that God is present not only at the finish line but throughout the journey itself. Every act of growth, every small victory, every effort to move forward contains spiritual significance.

Perhaps that is why gratitude is such a central Jewish value. Gratitude trains us to notice God's blessings before the story is complete. It teaches us to celebrate the flour and water before the bread emerges from the oven.

As we navigate our own journeys, may we learn to appreciate not only the destinations we hope to reach but also the sacred steps that bring us there. For often it is in those small moments of progress that we discover God's presence most clearly.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and God willing the full redemption speedily and in our days,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Rabbi Cohen in Washington D.C. Rabbi Cohen recently participated in the Israel Allies Foundation's Jerusalem Day celebration on Capitol Hill, joining leaders and friends of Israel in honoring Jerusalem and the enduring U.S.-Israel relationship.
In his remarks, Rabbi Cohen reflected that, "Jerusalem is more than a city. It is a dream carried across generations."
