A World of One

Purim may now be in our rear-view mirror in time, but it must never fade from our spirit. More than any other holiday, Purim reminds us of the extraordinary power of one person to change the course of history.

At the decisive moment in the Megillah, the fate of the Jewish people hangs in the balance. Esther understands the danger before her. Anyone who enters the king's chamber without being summoned risks death. She hesitates. The stakes are overwhelming.

It is then that Mordechai speaks the words that echo through Jewish history: "Mi yodea im la'et kazot higa'at lamalchut", "Who knows if it was precisely for this moment that you became queen?" (Esther 4:14).

Perhaps Esther's entire journey, her rise to the palace, her hidden identity, the unlikely circumstances of her life, was all leading to this singular moment. Mordechai challenges her to recognize that the opportunity before her is not accidental. It is a calling.

And Esther rises.

Purim reminds us that history can turn on the courage of one individual willing to step forward when the moment arrives.

Yet the lesson of Purim is not only about queens and kings. It is about every one of us. We may not change the entire world, but each of us has the ability to change the world of one person every day.

In truth, there are no random encounters. Each meeting, each conversation, each opportunity to offer encouragement, compassion, or kindness may be one of those sacred moments in which Heaven is quietly asking us to act. A word spoken at the right time, a small gesture of care, or the courage to speak up can alter the course of another person's life.

The writer Mark Twain once observed, "The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you discover why." Judaism teaches that discovering our "why" often happens not in grand moments, but in the quiet opportunities placed before us each day.

In The Spirituality of Imperfection, Ernest Kurtz shares a powerful story. A seeker once cried out to God in anguish after seeing suffering people along the road — the broken, the poor, the wounded.

"God," he prayed, "how can You see such pain and do nothing?"

After a long silence, the answer came:

"I did do something. I created you."

That response captures a profound truth. God's compassion enters the world through human hands and human hearts. Each of us was created to reveal the light within us and to bring that light to others.

The Mishnah teaches, "Kol hamekayeim nefesh achat… ke'ilu kiyeim olam malei" , whoever sustains one soul is considered as if they sustained an entire world (Sanhedrin 37a). Every person is a world unto themselves. When we uplift one life, we elevate an entire universe.

Purim reminds us that redemption often begins with one courageous act by one individual at the right moment.

May we carry the spirit of Purim forward, recognizing that each day presents us with opportunities to brighten the world of one person, one act of kindness, one moment of courage at a time.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and God wiling the full light of the redemption speedily and in our days,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Public Service Announcement – Passover Shopping Reminder As we prepare for Pesach and begin our shopping, please be sure to check labels carefully and confirm that every item is clearly marked Kosher for Passover. Even products placed in the "Kosher for Passover" section may sometimes be shelved there in error, so it's important not to rely on location alone. A quick look at the certification can help ensure that everything we bring into our homes truly meets the standards for Pesach.
As we prepare for the upcoming holiday, we are excited to launch our Annual Pesach Website. Agudath Sholom is committed to helping you get ready for the holiday. This site will provide you with answers to many of the questions.
