You may not change the world, but you can change the world of one person. We are in the midst of the Purim celebration, but the spirit must remain. More than any other holiday, Purim emphasizes the power of one person to make a difference. In the critical juncture in the story, it is Esther's fate to plead with Achashverosh for the safety of her people. She is reticent as the risk of death is great for anyone who enters the king's chambers without permission would be killed. During this moment of truth, Mordechai tells her, "Who knows if for this time you were chosen to be the queen." Perhaps Esther's entire purpose in this position of influence was for this opportunity. She must rise to the occasion. In essence, every encounter with another person can be transformed into an eternal one. There is no meeting that is random. When we are faced with an opportunity to speak up, perform a kind deed, a mitzvah, it is God's way of calling on us to make an impact and make a difference. It is the secret of leading a meaningful life. In the words of Mark Twain, "The two most important days of your life are the day you are born and the day you understand why." God orchestrates many of these moments. It is our sacred task to infuse them with holiness. In his book Spirituality of Imperfection, Ernest Kurtz speaks to this idea. I am grateful to Howard Fogel for recommending this book. Kurtz writes, "Past the seeker, as he prayed, came the crippled and the beggar and the beaten. And seeing them, the holy one went down into deep prayer and cried, "Great God, how is it that a loving creator can see such things and yet do nothing about them?" And out of the long silence, God said: "I did do something about them. I created you." We are created to serve God and humanity. We are designed to reveal the light inside of us every day and share it with the world. Each person is a world in and of themselves. With prayers for our brothers and sisters in Israel and God willing good news ahead and Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and Happy Shushan Purim, Rabbi Daniel Cohen |

CAS Youth Parsha Parshat Ki Tisa is a story of mistakes and second chances. Bnei Yisrael make a big mistake—but Hashem teaches them that they can fix their mistake and still be close to Him. Hashem tells Moshe that every Jew must give a half-shekel coin to help take care of the Mishkan. This reminds us that we are all part of something bigger—no one is complete on their own!
Then, The Golden Calf – Moshe goes up Har Sinai to receive the Torah, but he stays longer than Bnei Yisrael expected. They get scared and think he isn't coming back, so they make a terrible mistake—they build and worship a Golden Calf… honestly… a cow? They should have made golden burgers and fries instead! When Moshe came down and saw what they did, he threw down the Luchot (Tablets) and broke them! He knew Bnei Yisrael made a terrible choice… but then—-he also prays to Hashem to forgive them! Hashem Gives a Second Chance! Moshe goes back up the mountain, and Hashem gives him a new set of Luchot. This shows that even when we make mistakes, we can always fix them and return to Hashem.
|
Questions for Your Shabbat Table: - Why do you think Hashem asked for a half-shekel instead of a whole one? What does this teach us about how we need each other?
- What was the big mistake Bnei Yisrael made, and why do you think they did it?
- When Moshe saw the Golden Calf, he broke the Luchot. Do you think that was the right thing to do? Why or why not?
- Hashem gave Bnei Yisrael a second chance with new Luchot. Can you think of a time when you made a mistake and got a second chance?
- What can we learn about how we should treat others when we think about how Hashem gave us a second chance?
