Absorb and Grow the Message

The Torah refers to Eliezer as Avraham's right hand man. He is known as Damesek Eliezer. Rashi explains that Damesek is an acronym for doleh umashkeh, he draws forth and gives to drink since Eliezer did only learn Torah from Avraham but taught it to others.

What can we learn from Eliezer about our own life and growth?

Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe (1914 - 2005 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shlomo_Wolbe)

expounds on Rashi's idea by noting that Eliezer did not simply repeat Avraham's words verbatim. Rather, he delved into Avraham's teachings, sought to understand them, internalize them and then extract pearls of wisdom to teach to others.

The Alter of Kelm, (1824-1898 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simcha_Zissel_Ziv) embodied this ideal in his teachings to his students. He would write down his discourses and distribute them to his disciples so they could review, internalize and extract messages for their own lives. Rabbi Wolbe would also set a specific time following his discourses for his students to review them. Until they "made it their own" the words would unlikely penetrate their personalities.

How often do we hear a word of inspiration, a Dvar Torah, or wisdom and then we forget what we heard within one day or even hours? The key to truly growing in life is to digest an idea and reflect on how we can concretely apply the message to our own lives. If not, we are simply allowing words to go in one ear and out the other. Imagine how radically different our lives would be if we were better today than we were yesterday and better tomorrow than we are today.

Rabbi Yerucham Levovitz (1873-1936 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeruchom_Levovitz) summed it up by saying, "Do not wear borrowed clothing." Do not copy other people's actions. Every individual has his own unique role in serving God and only he was given tools to actualize his unique potential. Develop a plan of action appropriate for you.

Learn from Eliezer. Make growth your own. In this spirit, I learned much from my colleague Rabbi Menachem Penner, who was an outstanding Scholar in Residence last Shabbat.. He shared two ideas at Seudah Shlishit to make Tefillah more meaningful. First, start with your Mork and Mindy moment. Mork would let his boss, Orson, know what happened on earth that day and in his life. Literally, say to God, "God, it is me, lets talk."

Make Tefillah Personal. Bring God into your life and engage in a conversation with Him. Second, if we find ourselves thinking about other matters or worries during our private mediation, bring God into the conversation. Ask him to help us in that particular concern. God can do ANYTHING.

Stop. Reflect. Internalize, Incorporate and Make an Idea your Own. Our growth will be exponential and eternal.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen
