The Amen Pledge and a Story of Faith Sukkot is the holiday of faith. In particular, following the awesome day of Yom Kippur, we affirm our trust in God through the mitzvah of dwelling in the Sukkah, God's embrace. Below is a beautiful and inspiring story shared by the former Soviet refusenik Yosef Mendlovich. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yosef_Mendelevitch However, we should never underestimate the simple but powerful ways we express our Emunah, our faith in God, most notably when we answer Amen to a Kaddish or a Bracha. I propose our shul this year takes one commitment as community. One step after Yom Kippur, one we can do. The Amen Pledge. Join me in making a firm commitment to answer every Amen of a mourner's Kaddish to elevate the soul of a loved one. Join me in answering Amen to every bracha recited out loud at kiddush, after washing our hands at Seudah Shlshit or in davening. Every Amen, every public declaration of our faith elevates all of us, our community and is an invitation to God to instill even more blessings in our lives. Let me know you are in! In the forced labor camp I tried very hard to observe the mitzvoth - Shabbos, prayer, festivals - even though for everything I was punished. I spent three years in the harsh conditions of the closed prison for observing the Shabbos. There was only one mitzvah I was unable to keep: the Mitzvah of Sukkah. Who was going to permit me to build a sukkah in a KGB camp! Some years later, I saw at the edge of the camp a pile of straw. I knew that if I could scrape the straw so that I would be able to see the stars from underneath, this would be considered as observing the mitzvah of sukkah. The problem was that this pile of straw was near to the camp's electric fence. It was forbidden to approach it. One might be suspected of an escape attempt and be shot. But the desire to observe the mitzvah overcame the fear. Towards evening, when they had not yet lit the projectors on the guard towers, under cover of the darkness, I ran toward the pile of straw, got inside it, scraped the straw looked at the stars and made the blessing "who has sanctified us by Thy commandments, and hast commanded us to dwell in the Sukkah." As soon as I finished the blessing, I rapidly retreated from the Sukkah. But my heart was filled with joy. I did it!" Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach! Join us for a weekly playdate with your little one and an opportunity to share your experiences, ask questions you need help with, gather resources, or just connect with other women.

- DOR L'DOR: This program seeks to build upon the multi generational aspect of our community by linking young families and seniors. Together, young families and seniors will build a mutual relationship, with young families offering a helping hand or caring phone call a few times a year, and with seniors in turn offering their wisdom, perspective, and encouragement to young families. - CAS FREE MEZUZAH CAMPAIGN IN FAIRFIELD COUNTY, CT Bringing Blessings to Jewish Homes. Do you know a neighbor or a friend who lacks a mezuzah? - COMMUNITY CHESED HELPERS An important role of the Chesed committee is outreach to the Shul's elderly and homebound, who are often isolated and lack a lifeline to our synagogue. - NEW JEWISH SENIOR SERVICES HOSPICE VOLUNTEER TRAINING DATES Chaifetz Family Hospice will be holding a 2-Day Hospice Training for people interested in giving their time and compassion to JSS clients in Fairfield County. Training will be held at Jewish Senior Services, 4200 Park Avenue, Bridgeport, CT on Sunday, October 27th and Sunday, November 3rd from 9 am - 5 pm. Training materials and meals will be provided free of charge.
