| | | | | The laws of kashrut highlight the second half of Parshat Shmini.
Observance of these rituals represents our unconditional commitment to G-d. It is true there are benefits to kashrut both social and spiritual, but fundamentally this touchstone is categorized as a chok -a mitzvah beyond human understanding - suprarational. One of the underappreciated yet significant areas of kashrut relates to insects. Fruits and vegetables are subject to insect infestation and require checking and cleaning prior to consumption. In the months ahead, we hope to host an expert in this area to educate us. In the interim, please visit the OU website to learn more about this mitzvah of kashrut and to download a free Fruit and Vegetable Inspection Chart.

This THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 8 pm FREE On Burning Ground is the true tale of one desperate and brilliant man's journey of survival. The story traces how at the height of World War II, Joseph Skakun, a devout blond-haired European rabbinical student adopted multiple religious and ethnic identities, including those of a Christian and a Muslim, in order to survive. The story culminates with his entry as a volunteer recruit into Hitler's Waffen-SS, the most feared and fearsome of Hitler's fighting divisions. On Burning Ground is a brave and revelatory tale of a son's father who risked it all, and through his amazing odyssey, was keenly aware of the price of such deceits. The author Michael Skakun is a writer, journalist, translator and memorist, as well as a public affairs consultant. Born in Jaffa, he has lived his entire life in the United States. He has served as an editor and columnist for various metropolitan weeklies and was a special consultant to the US Holocaust Memorial Council. |

BRING US YOUR DIRTY CARS TO CLEAN THIS SUNDAY APRIL 7TH 11 AM to 3 PM AT AGUDATH SHOLOM Sydney and Lilah Steinberg and I and our friends at BiCultural and Agudath Sholom are organizing a carwash at Agudath Sholom to raise money for the organization that supports the children who have lost parents in the line of duty in Israel, Widows and Orphans of the IDF. As you may know, this charity takes care of 5,000 families who have lost someone fighting fires, doing police work or serving in the military. Every penny will go to the charity! So please, have your parents drive their cars to the synagogue that Sunday and give the kids a chance to get the winter grime off your car for a good cause. They will have you in and out, and it will only cost $10 for the outside, $18 if you want the inside tidied up, too. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED IN THE MEANTIME TO MAKES POSTERS AND SPREAD THE WORD (INCLUDING BUGGING MOM AND DAD TO DRIVE THEIR CARS THROUGH THE SYNAGOGUE THAT DAY) AND, OF COURSE, TO HELP WASH ALL THE CARS ON APRIL 7th!!!! Sydney and I will be celebrating our own bar and bat mitzvahs this June at Agudath Sholom. So you would be helping both of us show our love of Israel by helping on April 7. From: Liam Bodurtha SPECIAL CONTEST FOR YOM YERUSHALAYIM: CAS is pleased to have your child participate in an Art & Essay Contest on the topic: "Why I Love Jerusalem." We wish to help celebrate our beloved Jerusalem, and the 65th Birthday of the modern state of Israel.
Children through Grade 3 will be invited to submit a picture of Jerusalem, in any media. This includes drawing, painting and collage. They can work from photos and pictures of Jerusalem.
The older children will be invited to submit an essay titled "Why I Love Jerusalem."
It must be between 200 & 500 words. They are encouraged to use any resource to learn about Jerusalem.
All submissions will be viewed and read by judges who will not know the identity of the children who submitted the work. There will also be an objective rating system that all the judges will use in determining the winners.
We are offering the prizes of 2 Yankees or Mets tickets for each winner in each age category. The deadline for all entries is Friday, April 26th.
The winning entries will be announced on Yom Yerushalayim - Wed., May 8th. Thank you for your cooperation with this fun and meaningful project!
