Welcome home Sandy & Rabbi Joe Ehrenkranz
Mazal Tov to our CAS members who complete the 7-1/2 year Daf Yomi cycle this week. We look forward to sharing in their celebration on Shabbat Nachamu, August 4
Help us welcome a very special group of Israeli children who have paid a big price personally for our collective ability to count on the State of Israel. Each one has lost a parent in the line of duty, protecting Israel. The nonprofit that looks out for them, IDF Widows and Orphans Organization (www.idfwo.org), has sent us a group of 41 twelve and thirteen-year-olds this Shabbat. Please consider greeting them as they arrive at CAS at 4 pm on Friday. We will honor them and the families who are hosting them with a special kiddush after morning services, where you will have another chance to say hello. So please do!
We remember the Munich 11 Join us at services to recite their names and offer a moment of silence to acknowledge their upcoming Yahrzeits
Halachic Reminders for Shabbat Erev Tisha B'Av Seudah Shlishit is considered your meal before the Fast. We will provide a meal in shul following 7:00 pm mincha. Fast Begins at 8:14 pm If you are staying in shul from Shabbat, bring your non-leather shoes on Friday to shul. If you leave your home after Shabbat (8:57 pm), recite Baruch Hamavdil Bein Kodesh LeChol to mark the end of Shabbat before driving to shul. We will recite Havdalah on a flame following Maariv (9:15 pm) and before Eicha on Saturday night. Maariv will be held in the main sanctuary
In addition to our complete Tisha B'Av Services, please join the following program Joint Program at JCC Texts That Tie: Weaving Together A Caring and Connected Community Sunday, July 29 6:45 pm-8:40 pm at the JCC Our Goal: To have members of the community meet and engage with one another, through the study of Jewish texts in small groups, about what it means to be a community and how we can promote unity Open to the entire community - women, men, teens and elementary school students - to come and learn. Sign up www.ujf.org/tishabav.aspx Participate in the community discussion. Go to www.ujfblog.wordpress.com History vs. Looking Forward "There was a time when it was important to know the place you came from in the broadest sense, to have a master narrative of a people as a bedrock for your own values. It grounded you, and gave you direction - if you know where you come from, you arguably have a better sense of where you are going. Tisha b'Av is best observed by those who appreciate history and understand that a nation must look back if it is to move forward." From the book, In the Narrow Places by Dr. Erica Brown QUESTION TO PONDER Do you believe that American Jews fully appreciate the rich history of the Jewish people, or do we tend to simply focus on the present and the future? | | |

Daf Yomi Shabbat Celebration - Shabbat, August 4 To celeberate the completion of the world wide seven year cycle of studying the Talmud, CAS will host a panel with our Daf Yomi participants following Shabbat services at 11 am. Hear inspiring stories and learn why men and women take time from the hectic pace of life for this transformative experience. The panel will be followed by a joyous and delicious kiddush in honor of the celebrants. See why you do not have to be a Torah scholar to join the next cycle! TWO COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT DAF YOMI: - Daf yomi shiurim are only open to men. CAS shiurim are open to all and are well attended by women.
- Learning daily Gemorah is tedious and perhaps even boring! Quite the contrary, Daf Yomi opens up an exciting perspective into learning our oral tradition, including history, homiletic teachings, and the basis for all our halacha.
