We hope you and your families are enjoying meaningful and uplifting holidays. Thank God, we experienced moving Yamim Noraim at CAS and hope that God answers all of our prayers for the good and we are all blessed with a year filled with much joy, health and growth. As we get ready for Sukkot, it is the perfect time to reflect on taking the inspiration of Yom Kippur and making it real in our lives. The Sages explain that the holiday of Sukkot is designed for this purpose. The holiday is action oriented. It consists of the mitzvoth of the four species which reminds us to give thanks for all of our material possessions and most importantly to use them in the service of God. The waving of the lulav in all directions testifies to God's ever presence in our lives. Of course, the Mitzvah of sitting in the sukkah is an opportunity to elevate our eating, socializing and words of Torah to a higher level. Before Sukkot, our backyard or driveway is just that but during the holiday they become holy by virtue of the Sukkah. The High Holidays reflect God in prayer and in shul but Sukkot is about transforming our spiritual stirrings into concrete steps to bringing God into our lives. As we swing into the fall, we are excited to offer a full array of adult education classes which will begin next week and the week of October 9th. Click here to learn more. Sukkot Night Rain Guidelines Generally, if it is raining on Sukkot, we eat inside. On the first night, tonight, we have a special obligation to be in the Sukkah.
If the weather reports or just what one observes indicates that this will not be happening shortly, there is no need to wait to recite Kiddush, particularly since the wait itself is unpleasant (mitzta'er). When reciting Kiddush in the Sukkah in the rain the Bracha of Leshev BaSukkah is omitted. If a man recites Kiddush in the Sukkah, he may still recite it a second time inside for his wife. However, if she has already said the bracha of Shehecheyanu (when she lit candles) and there is nobody else (including young children) listening to kiddush who has not said/heard this bracha, he should not say Shehecheyanu a second time. Since one has in mind to eat the rest of the meal in the house, Birkas Hamazon can be said in the house. Kiddush should be made after 7:20 PM Based on the writings of Rabbi Asher Bush)

- Shabbat Greeter Program We are looking to restart our Shabbat greeter program. We will have two greeters each week - 9:45 AM - 10:30 AM in the lobby and 10:30 AM - 11:15 AM at the Sanctuary entrance. The lobby greeter will focus on greeting people as they enter the building and assisting anyone who needs help. For instance, location of groups, the Sanctuary, the Coat Room, etc. The Sanctuary greeter will focus on controlling the traffic in and out. For instance, the greeter does not allow traffic in and out during Kedushah and the Rabbi's Sermon. Please take a look and sign up for a slot over the coming weeks. - Book Launch & Signing Event with Rabbi Moshe Kurtz Wednesday, October 11th at 7:00 PM. Over the past three years, Rabbi Kurtz has taught a range of classes on contemporary issues at Agudath Sholom. The feedback and insights provided by CAS members during these classes have contributed to the essays which have now culminated into the chapters of his first book: Challenging Assumptions (Mosaica Press, 2023). - Host Yedidya for a Meal! We have another wonderful meal-hosting opportunity in our community. Yedidya Rabinowitz is 19 years old, lives in Jerusalem and is currently serving in the IDF. In addition, he plays on the U23 Israel National Baseball Team. Yedidya will be here in Stamford training at a local professional facility October 17-December 14, 2023. Inviting him to your home for a Shabbat meal is a wonderful way to learn more about life in Israel, the IDF, international baseball and more. Friday night dinners are designated to be in the neighborhood where he is staying so it is an easy walk back. Saturday lunches can be anywhere within the eruv at a kosher home.
