On the Events of the week We have all been disturbed by the scenes from around our country this week. A proper engagement with the issues requires much time and thought, but I would like to express one element of my own internal processing and introspection. This week's parsha presents us with the character of the Nazir, the person who vows to restrict himself or herself from various behaviors. These include consumption of wine and grape products, cutting of one's hair, and ritual defilement through contact with a corpse. The Sages have a particularly ambivalent attitude towards the Nazir, on the one hand deeming him a sinner, while on the other hand, considering him saintly. How can the same individual be considered both a sinner and a saint? Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch observes that the restrictions of the Nazir are clearly not the essence of the vow, but rather physical manifestations of an envisioned internal process. The Nazir, for example, is not only prohibited from drinking wine, but even from eating the skin and pit of the grape. He is obligated to completely distance himself from grapes and all its products. It is clear, therefore, that the Torah is not focused on the wine per se. Similar examples can be provided for the other restrictions of the Nazir. This insight of Rabbi Hirsch helps explain the tension between sinner and saint inherent in the Nazir. If the Nazir's goal is measured solely by the outward restrictions he has accepted upon himself, then indeed his actions are not favorable in God's eyes. All he has done is engage in a public display of false piety, attempting to show how holy he is, all the while ignoring his own inner character. If the Nazir, however, has engaged in appropriate introspection, and based on that, decided to accept upon himself the status of Nazir, then his vow has the potential to elevate him. His intention is pure, and therefore his actions will be as well. Let us use this moment in history, not merely to engage in outward manifestations of concern. Let us not squander this moment by stopping at pronouncements and messages on social media, most of which are simply caught in our own echo chambers. Rather, in the spirit of the Nazir, let us each look deep inside of ourselves and search for any remnants, big or small, of the attitudes we have outwardly denounced. Only through such deep introspection will each of us take advantage of this painful moment, elevate our individual characters, and through that bring healing to our country. Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Oran Zweiter

Keilim Mikvah Update While the Keilim Mikvah is closed, the Beth Din of America has established a mechanism to allow for the use of new utensils. This form was created by the Beth Din of America (www.bethdin.org) to allow individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic to sell kelim to a non-Jew and borrow them back to use for themselves. Since kelim owned by a non-Jew do not require immersion in a mikvah, this process allows for the use of the keilim without immersing them. You should complete this form only after the kelim are in your possession. |
Kaddish Update As mentioned, Aish HaTorah will keep your loved one in mind for the recitation of Kaddish by signing up here but you may also submit the name to a standing minyan in the IDF. Sign up here |

- to Rabbi Mark Dratch, Yolly Dratch, and the entire Lamm family, on the passing of Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm. Most notably, Rabbi Lamm served as President of Yeshiva University, where he championed Torah learning at the highest level as well as knowledge of the world. He was a man of great dignity, of religious passion and of the finest character. His legacy will endure forever. May his memory be for a blessing always. Here is a link to his books which are all very worthwhile. Tributes of Note: A Memorial Tribute to Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm video, Personal Reflections from Rabbi JJ Shachter, New York Times Obituary, YU News Obituary
- on the tragic passing of George Floyd and wish his family, our community and country comfort, strength and healing in the weeks ahead. This week, Rabbi Cohen spoke to Reverend Dr. Joseph Ford of Faith Tabernacle Church in Stamford (previous home of CAS from 1938-1965) and expressed our communities outrage at the murder of George Floyd, our solidarity with his community and our common humanity. He was deeply appreciative of our outreach and they both pledged to grow their personal friendship and between our congregations. We are all one people under One God. The more that we as a community and country embody this inviolable truth, the more peace and healing God willing, we will see in the day and weeks ahead. In this spirit, please read a summary of Rabbi Norman Lamm's theology of anti racism - click here. In these sermons, Rabbi Lamm decried the brutality of racial discrimination and called for its end. But beyond engaging the plight of the victims, Rabbi Lamm focused on the perpetrators: racists themselves. Though Rabbi Lamm's sermons were delivered over the span of many years and focus on different aspects of the racist's persona, woven together they yield a fleshed-out conception of racism.
