Walking Upright I will never forget sitting in Rabbi Aaron Rakeffet's class in 1990 in Jerusalem amidst the turmoil of the Gulf War when he told us "Remember the words in Parshat Bechukotai. God wants us to return to the land of Israel upright and standing tall. (Vayikra 26:13) Do not wait until you are buried in the land of Israel to make it your home. Do not return horizontally, but vertically and upright. You are blessed with the opportunity in this generation to come with pride. Make Israel your home." I share these words as a reminder to all of us. What do the eternal words of God to "walk to Israel upright" mean to each of us? First, it is a call to consider for those who are able to do so to "live the dream" and become a partner in the miraculous return of true Jewish people to Israel after 2,000 years. Live and visit Israel. To learn more about aliyah, visit https://www.nbn.org.il/. Second, celebrate the gift of Israel, stand with Israel with pride and advocate for her. There are so many ways. This Sunday, join us as we celebrate Yom Yerushalayim. We are blessed to live in a country where we can and should walk freely in support of Israel. Whether as a spectator or participant, make the Salute to Israel Day Parade a priority. Be there in body and spirit. Third, walking upright to Israel is a general call to each of us to hold our heads high as Jews. It is tragic that Germany issued a statement this week that it is safer now for Jews not to wear their yarmulkes in public. The right response is not for Germany to cower in fear, but to stand in solidarity with the Jewish people. Kudos to the largest newspaper in Germany, Bild, for pushing back against the recommendation. "If even one person in our country can't wear a kippah without putting themselves in danger, the only answer is that we all wear a kippah," Bild's editor-in-chief Julian Reichelt tweeted. "The kippah belongs to Germany! That's why tomorrow the kippah will be printed for cutting out on page one." To all of the men in the shul, wear your Yarmulka with pride. Wear it around town. Wear it at work. If the Germans can ask everyone to wear a kippah in solidarity with the Jewish people in Germany, France, and unfortunately many other countries, how can we not do the same? Walk to Israel with Pride. Consider Aliyah. Celebrate Jerusalem. Join at the Salute to Israel Day Parade. Advocate for Israel. Live as a Proud Jew. Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and a happy Yom Yerushalayim, Rabbi Daniel Cohen

- BACK TO SCHOOL SHOP, INC is an all-volunteer non-profit organization whose mission is to enable every child to have access to the basic school clothing and supplies they need and in doing so to help build the confidence and enthusiasm necessary for a successful school year. Since the first Back to School Shop event in 2015, over 850 children have been outfitted for school. Each summer before the start of the new school year, we operate a one-day pop-up store where economically disadvantaged elementary school children can shop for brand new school clothes and supplies. While the children are shopping with volunteer personal shoppers, their parents can visit the on-site Japha Family Resource Center where 20 community organizations will be on hand to provide information about important community services. Each year nearly 250 community volunteers come together to make this special day happen for Stamford children. Visit www.backtoschoolshop.org for more information, to make a donation, or to register to volunteer for our 5th Anniversary event on July 28!
