Shabbat Shalom Building Our House of God As the year 2017 ends, we face many last minute requests for donations. The allure of tax deductions looms large as we carefully consider our allocation of funds and resources. We are neither the first, nor the last, to struggle with how much money to give and to whom? Over 2,500 years ago, the Jewish people confronted such a question. Less than 100 years after the destruction of the first Temple in Jerusalem, they were fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to rebuild the Temple once again. The events which ensued are recorded for posterity in the book of Ezra, the scribe. We study this important work on Tuesday mornings. This week, we learned in Chapter 4 that although a small group began the process of rebuilding, the people were thwarted in the project by external forces. As a result, construction stopped. They became dispirited and lacked the courage to complete the project. Until one voice was heard. During Ezra's time, a prophet Chagai came to the people and awakened their spirit. He asked them, "Is it time for you to dwell in your well timbered houses, while God's house lies in waste? Consider your ways. You eat, but you have not enough. You drink, but you are not filled. You clothe yourself, but you are not warm. You earn wages to put them into a bag with holes. " First, Chagai questions their priorities. How can they only invest in their personal homes, but not in their spiritual home, a house of God? Secondly, he reminds them that true happiness and life satisfaction emerges from an enrichment of spirit. All the money in the world cannot satisfy us if we are not whole in our soul. To the credit of the Jewish people, they heed Chagai's voice. They reorient their priorities and forge ahead in faith and renewed spirit. One of the highest priories of our nation is to create a sanctuary for God, so He may dwell within. In ancient times, it was the Beit Hamikdash and today, it is our shuls. God willing, the third Temple will be rebuilt speedily in our days. As we consider our end of year contributions, invest in Agudath Sholom, our spiritual home. Whether for the annual dinner and/or capital campaign, your investment reflects the noble and Divine priority to create and sustain a home for God. Thank you in advance for your generosity and commitment to our future. We are all conduits for God's blessings and may God in turn bless us with renewed strength of spirit in our sacred mission. Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Daniel Cohen AIPAC Policy Conference 2018 Please join me and over 90 CAS members at the 2018 AIPAC Policy Conference on March 4th-6th. An Opportunity to Honor, with a Tax Savings Benefit for You The pending tax legislation in Washington may impact your tax benefit from charitable donations. One of the changes included in the new law is a significant increase in the standard deduction, along with limitations on the state and local tax deduction. This means fewer taxpayers will itemize deductions in 2018, limiting the benefit of charitable giving next year. If you are a taxpayer who currently itemizes rather than claiming the standard deduction, you may want to consider accelerating your charitable contributions into 2017 to get a larger income tax benefit. With that in mind, we offer the opportunity for early sign-up for our March, 2018 Annual Dinner. We expect a great evening, honoring individuals who contribute in many beautiful, important ways to our vibrant and growing community. Of course, you will want to honor them with an ad in our celebration journal. Just click here to place your ad and make payment before December 31 - and you'll receive a tax savings benefit in 2017. *Note: If you would like to transfer stock, please contact Matt Feinberg (mfeinberg@cas-stamford.org or 203-358-2200) |
