Shabbat Shalom Avraham's Wake-Up Call for Modern Jewish Education Not that I do not have faith and confidence in the perpetuity of the Jewish people and our children embracing Torah, but it was a wakeup call. The personal refection reminded me of an idea expressed by Rabbi Nathan Lopes Cardozo, one the foremost modern Jewish philosophers, on the legacy of Avraham. www.cardozoacademy.orgHe posits that there are two schools within Judaism, two types of houses of study: the Beit Midrash of Moshe Rabbenu and the Beit Midrash of Avraham Avinu. Both are fundamental to Judaism but the difference between the two is critical to understand. The Academy of Moses promotes the legal system of the Torah, the Halacha. The Academy of Abraham embodies the very roots of our faith. He explains that Avraham's discovery was not purely an intellectual one, but the result of an existential encounter with God. He discovered not so much that God exists, but that God is of no importance unless he is of supreme importance. The discovery transformed him. It infused him with a great amount of wonder for all existence and deep concern for mankind. When people encountered Avraham they were captivated and inspired by him. It has been said, we do not need more text books, but more text people. In his presence, people were recreated and embraced the notion that everything that we do, think and feel is touched by the spirit of God. In the words of Rabbi Cardozo, "Too few people realize that the way we close a door without properly looking to see if there is someone following us, whether we walk a guest to the door or not, whether we fold a towel after using it or leave it for another to pick it up, are the actions that reveal much about our inner self. Because all behavior takes place in the presence of God, nothing is insignificant and even our trivialities should aspire to holiness." As parents and grandparents, do we embody this spirit? Do we educate for mastery of text alone or to inspire text people who will exemplify the timeless and holy values of Judaism? Most moral education happens by power of example. We publish the book of our lives every day. Through our actions, we teach what is worthy of admiration and what is worthy of disdain. May we exhibit the courage to embrace not only the academy of Moses but of Abraham. The next generation will catch fire not when we impose our way of life on them, but when they are captivated by our passion and purpose. The three topics will be: (1) who am I, and what are my responsibilities as an individual? (2) who am I, and what are my responsibilities in my family? (3) who am I, and what are my responsibilities in my local community, Jewish people and the world? This is a great opportunity for fathers and sons to bond and grow in preparation for their Bnai Mitzvah.

Professionals in education, engineering, fashion, finance, law, nonprofits, and real estate, among other fields, will speak about their professional development and provide insights and advice for those interested in their fields. - STAMFORD MAYORAL FORUM Sunday, Oct. 29 from 11am-12:30pm. CAS Mens Club and the CAS Sisterhood will host Mayor David Martin, Barry Michelson, (former Zoning Board member) and John Zito for a forum. The forum will include a 5-7 minute platform presentation from each, followed by each responding to 7 questions (that have been submitted by you in advance), followed by a wrap up 3-5 minute conclusion then a 15-20 minute question and answer session from the audience. - JSU TEEN PROGRAMS AT WEST HILL AND STAMFORD HIGH JSU run more than 275 Jewish culture clubs on public high school campuses. The clubs provide Jewish teens with programs that strengthen their Jewish identity and connection to Israel. Westhill JSU will be taking place on Fridays twice a month starting next week, Friday November 3rd @2:05 PM in room 602. The Stamford high club will also be on Fridays twice a month, alternating weekends @2:05 PM in room 242. Next one Nov. 16th. Both clubs will take place for roughly forty minutes and feature different discussion elements and activities to foster a love and passion for Judaism and Jewish identity. By creating a fun, social atmosphere, and bringing cool, Jewish advisers to public school campuses, JSU reaches all types of Jewish teenagers.
