Shabbat Shalom Seize Meditative Moments A story is told about a farmer who misplaced a valuable watch somewhere in his barn. He asked everyone to search up and down to find his precious heirloom. Unfortunately, despite hours spent looking for the timepiece, it was nowhere to be found. Later in the day, a young boy announced to the farmer with great joy that he had found the watch. Astonished, the farmer asked the boy how he was able to find it even though so many others had searched high and low without finding it. The boy responded, "Well, once the barn was quiet, I put my head to the ground and heard the watch ticking." We may only hear our inner voice when we turn off the outside world. "I have spent many days stringing and unstringing my instrument while the song I came to sing remains unsung."- Rabindranath Tagore When Pharaoh enslaved the Jewish people, he understood that a nation with no time for self reflection or the capacity to dream will never survive. For this reason, he worked them endlessly; so much so that even when Moshe proclaimed the redemption near, the Torah states, (Exodus 6:9) "They did not listen to him for they were burdened by hard labor and constricted in spirit." They had no time to dream, to stop, to grow, and to aspire to a better life. We live in a world bombarded by noise. Wherever we go, we're confronted by sounds and sights vying for our attention. Drivers are often distracted, and it's not uncommon to be interrupted during dinner by our personal devices. Sitting in front of our computers, we have trouble staying focused. We experience a jolt of joy when we receive texts and when our posts are liked on Facebook. We run from place to place, seemingly accomplishing more, but in reality thinking less. God challenges each of us to ask the question, "Do we walk in the dark or in the light? Is our day aimless or purposeful? Do we react to events or create our own destiny? "The human race is a monotonous affair. Most people spend the greatest part of their time working in order to live, and what little freedom remains so fills them with fear that they seek out any and every means to be rid of it."- Goethe, The Sorrows of Young Werther Develop the discipline to create the sacred space needed to nourish the stirrings of your soul. How can we discover our meditative moment? Shabbat is a wonderful antidote. We turn off the outside world and turn on our inner world. It can't happen amid the daily cacophony of sounds. In the silence and quiet, we can't help but hear the whispers of our soul. If we face God in prayer and silence, God will speak to us. To borrow a slogan from Coca-Cola, this principle is about the pause that refreshes. The more we reflect on our lives, the more fulfilled our lives will be, and thus aligned with our deepest aspirations. A walk in the woods or communing with nature may stir our senses and encourage us to return to our roots. Seizing our meditative moments enables us to lead our lives in perfect alignment with our inner, transcendent desires. These "pauses"-great and small, daily, weekly, or monthly-serve as the anchor for recalibration. The options for seizing a meditative moment range from prayer, Torah study, walking, yoga, or simply being alone and apart from the noise of daily life. The strategies are personal and plentiful, but the critical component is frequency and fidelity to the process. May we have the courage to seize meditative moments every day. It is only then that we are truly free. It is only then that we will lead our lives in tune with the people we aspire to be. CAS Teens | This Week in the CAS Teen World by Yaakov Faratci, Teen Diretor I'm very excited to return to Stamford and not, "Make Shabbot Great Again" but realize by being in this community again and again how great Shabbot really is. We are starting off with a Friday night Tisch and oneg, lighting a non-muktzah fire from 8:30-10 at the home of Rabbi and Diane Cohen- 15 Revonah Cirlce. Then, at 9:30 Shabbos morning we are having teen minyan with seven different layners and a few new Chazzanin, it will be a total team effort with kiddush afterwards. Then Motzei Shabbot we will be playing laser tag, going mini-bowling, playing arcade games, and having an unforgettable night at "FunfornKids and Grown Ups too" from 7-9 PM. CAS Winter Classes New Adult Education Classes Announcements - Winter Season Most of the Fall Semester classes will continue. You can join them each week. Rabbi Cohen will restart his Tuesday Torah classes on Isaiah, Depth of Genesis and Parsha Perspectives as and his Friday morning Taste of Torah. Rabbi Walk will continue his Sunday class Bible in the Beginning, Monday Inyana DeYoma, Tuesday Kabalah class, and Thursday Talmud class. Rabbi Zweiter will offer these new classes: Weekly Haftarah - Wednesday, 9 AM - The weekly haftarah is one of the most frequently recited parts of our liturgy, and yet also one of the most overlooked. Come study the meaning of the weekly haftarah, its connection to the weekly parsha, and gain a deeper appreciation of this sometimes 'lost' piece of liturgy. All texts will be in Hebrew and English.
Rambam Reboot: Maimonides' Principles of the Jewish Faith- Thursday, 9 AM - Many of us have heard of the 13 Principles of Faith, but where does that come from? Come study these fundamental texts from their source- the writings of Maimonides. We will try to understand exactly what Maimonides thinks we should believe, as well as positions of those that differed with him. Enrich your understanding of the fundamentals of your faith in just one hour a week! All texts will be in Hebrew and English.
Practical Workshop: How to Maintain a Jewish Home - This 4 part series will explain the basics of starting and maintaining a Jewish home, in a friendly, hands-on fashion. - JEWISH SENIOR SERVICES HOSPICE VOLUNTEER TRAINING: The goal is to have trained Hospice volunteers in clusters all over Fairfield County so that when the need presents itself, volunteers do not have to travel far. Chaifetz Family Hospice will be holding a two day Hospice Volunteer Training Program for anyone interested in giving their time and compassion to terminally ill patients and their loved ones. Training will be held at Jewish Senior Services, 4200 Park Avenue, Bridgeport, CT on Sunday, February 5th and Sunday, February 12th from 9:00am-4:30pm. Training materials and meals will be provided free of charge.
