Shabbat Shalom Parent or Friend Parenting is one of the most challenging and rewarding endeavors. There are moments of "anguish" in raising children, but also, God willing, many moments of nachas and joy. No manuals exist for every situation and each child is unique. Nevertheless, we hope and pray that our children and grandchildren embody the values of menschlichkeit and commitment to Torah, God, Israel and humanity. We guide them to realize their Divine potential and be their very best. As Yaakov nears the end of his life, he blesses each one of his children. However, his words convey a timeless instructive for life. Rather than simply offer them all words of encouragement, he tempers his words with criticism. He understands that he is not their friend, but their parent. In the younger years, a parent is tasked with educating a child, mustering the courage to say "no" and simultaneously raising a child to make responsible choices as an adult. Of course, as a child grows in independence, the relationship between parent and child evolves. This past week was my grandmother's unveiling. In reflecting on her life, I remarked that she was able to embody the ideal of balancing love and restraint. She developed a relationship with each of her grandchildren, her "greats" as she would call them, her children, their spouses, her nieces and nephews, and her cousins. She was and is the matriarch of our family, who brought us all together and, together with my grandfathers, always made the effort to be part of our lives. However, her love was tempered by her honesty and frankness, her gevurah, her strength. She let everyone know how she felt to guide us and motivate us to be our very best. She offered helpful advice because she wanted us to improve - out of love. As a parent and grandparent, she embodied the attribute of Tiferet - splendor, the attribute associated with Yaakov. She possessed a soul infused with love, kindness, and generosity, balanced with strength, tenacity, determination, spunk and honesty. In our generation, the challenge as parents and grandparents is great. We live in an age of entitlement. Yet, the Torah approach is exactly the opposite. It is our role to cultivate gratitude, humility and morality in our youth. May God grant us the wisdom and courage to balance our love with restraint, to lead by example and God willing, merit generations of children who will be a source of blessing to our families, the Jewish people and the world. As we read this portion, we join hundreds of congregations around the country in focusing our attention to issues concerning the end of life planning that affect each and every family. At CAS, we will use this opportunity to raise communal and individual awareness about the importance of a Halachic Living Will. I will be away this Shabbat but Rabbi Zweiter will address the topic on Shabbat morning. CAS Winter Classes New Adult Education Classes Announcements - Winter Season Most of the Fall Semester classes will continue. You can join them each week. Rabbi Cohen will restart his Tuesday Torah classes on Isaiah, Depth of Genesis and Parsha Perspectives as and his Friday morning Taste of Torah. Rabbi Walk will continue his Sunday class Bible in the Beginning, Monday Inyana DeYoma, Tuesday Kabalah class, and Thursday Talmud class. Rabbi Zweiter will offer these new classes: Weekly Haftarah - Wednesday, 9 AM - The weekly haftarah is one of the most frequently recited parts of our liturgy, and yet also one of the most overlooked. Come study the meaning of the weekly haftarah, its connection to the weekly parsha, and gain a deeper appreciation of this sometimes 'lost' piece of liturgy. All texts will be in Hebrew and English.
Rambam Reboot: Maimonides' Principles of the Jewish Faith- Thursday, 9 AM - Many of us have heard of the 13 Principles of Faith, but where does that come from? Come study these fundamental texts from their source- the writings of Maimonides. We will try to understand exactly what Maimonides thinks we should believe, as well as positions of those that differed with him. Enrich your understanding of the fundamentals of your faith in just one hour a week! All texts will be in Hebrew and English.

Chaifetz Family Hospice will be holding a two day Hospice Volunteer Training Program for anyone interested in giving their time and compassion to terminally ill patients and their loved ones.
