Looking Up
Do we look down when we walk or do we look up? The answer makes a difference not only for our safety, but for our souls. Abraham and Sarah looked up. In the masses of people we meet, faces can become a blur. Navigating sidewalks in Manhattan becomes a human obstacle course, but we forget every human being has a story and a soul.
Every person is created with holiness and purpose. Avraham and Sarah did not care that the guests were idolaters. They were created in God's image and as such treated with warmth and respect. They understood that one gesture of kindness, one encounter, can transform the anonymity of meeting into a heartfelt and memorable experience.
On the heels of the election and the upcoming holiday season, there is no better message for healing and moving forward towards the future. I guarantee that you will meet someone today, tomorrow and every day whose life you can impact. Look up and do not miss the opportunity.
Recently, a young man shared a story with me. "Elisa and I were walking down Columbus Ave. We passed a homeless man who asked if we could buy him lunch. I immediately agreed to buy him pizza and as I was going in to the store, he asked if it could be with extra cheese. We both laughed at each other. While I was getting him food, my wife engaged him in conversation. When I returned with his lunch, we started to talk and I realized how important it was to engage another person in conversation and to make them feel like a part of humanity no matter what their circumstance."
In the midst of millions of people, he found meaning in the moment. We all can do the same. This week, join the Men's Club as we thank our first responders. Find a way to model the anticipatory and intentional kindness of Avraham and Sarah every day. The world is built on kindness.
May we share joyous occasions in the weeks ahead in good health and may the spirit of kindness and unity awash our families and nation.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and Happy Thanksgiving,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
Welcome new members Karen and Matthew Gordon and their children Emma, Max and Ori. We wish them much joy in their new home in Stamford.
