Shabbat Shalom Is Your Home Holy? This past week, I participated in a Chanukat Habayit ceremony. We offered prayers, words of Torah and enjoyed food on the occasion of a new young family, Jonathan and Maytal Lerner, moving into their new home. Recently, a young man who is moving came to the Sisterhood gift shop to purchase a mezuzah for his new home in Boston. The summer is a time for moving and establishing new roots. Both experiences reinforced for me the central role of a Jewish home. When we move into a new house, it is not only a fitting time to express gratitude to God, but also to highlight the idea that our homes must be conduits for realizing our divine potential and bringing blessings to the world. Do we study Torah in our home? Is our home open to guests beyond our immediate social circles? How do we cultivate peace - shalom bayit? Whether new residents or not, these ideals should inspire us every day. The placement of a Mezuzah and kissing it as we enter each room serves as a visible reminder of the potential holiness of every place and moment. As we get ready for the New Year, I would love to help you, together with our clergy, sanctify your home. If you would like to learn more about a Chanukat Habayit ceremony, you need a mezuzah, or you would like us to help you or a neighbor affix one on the doorposts of your home, let us know. We continue to offer a free mezuzah to anyone in Fairfield County. May God bless all of our homes with peace, health, Torah, growth and holiness. - Answer - This prohibition is an expression of mourning as we approach the Ninth of Av (Sunday, August 14th). The prohibition begins after sunset (8:06 PM) on Thursday evening. There are two exceptions to these restrictions. First, we are obligated to rejoice on Shabbat and meat, chicken and wine are permitted. Second, you may eat meat and drink wine on the occasion of a siyum, the completion of a body of Torah study, generally a Talmudic tractate, book of Tanach or order of mishna. You may participate in siyum by being present the time of the study and celebration. Introducing the Shabbat Shalom Mitzvah Mission Bring a Smile to our members. Let them know we are thinking of them. We recently launched an initiative to call our seniors and wish them a Shabbat Shalom, share shul updates, see how we can be helpful and check in. The Fast starts at 7:54 pm. When Shabbat ends at 8:37 pm, recite Baruch Hamavdil Bein Kodesh LeChol to mark the end of Shabbat before driving to shul.
