Keeping Kosher vs. Prayer
Simple yet profound. Rabbi Soloveitchik notes that there is only one verse in the Torah mentioning prayer (Devarim 11:13) but many chapters address dietary laws. Why?
The answer reflects a fundamental tenet of our faith. It is easier for man to pray than withdraw from food he desires. Humanity is ready to serve G-d spiritually but may resent any interference with his daily eating habits or manner in which he gratifies his physical needs. The prominence of the laws of kashrut teaches that it is impossible to sanctify the spirit without leading a disciplined life.
Judaism firmly roots the road to spirituality through the here and now and our daily decisions. Our choice of food without which we could not survive is designed to foster within us a Divine consciousness every day.
Yet, it is not only through the choices of buying kosher food. Our sense of G-d is heightened when we recite a bracha, or meditation prior to eating. We do not live to eat but eat to live. For this reason, the halacha recommends we do not eat while walking but sitting so we can be focused to truly enjoy the food and tap into its full physical and spiritual benefit. Consuming kosher food also creates community.
It goes beyond even the way we eat. Making an effort to buy Israeli products as a counter to the BDS movement as we encourage through "Love Israel Products", or supporting local farmers through our CAS Goes Organic initiative reflect other ways to sanctify our daily lives through food. As Pesach approaches, we are obligated to insure that every family possesses the financial wherewithal to celebrate Pesach. Make a contribution to our Maot Chitim, Pesach Charity fund.
Prayer is indispensable to religious life but God requires that we sanctify and elevate our bodies every day. As Rabbi Soloveitchik writes, "We have existed for almost two thousand years without a sanctuary and the absence of its service has not affected the integrity of our people. If a Jewish community would reject kashrut, however, it would become assimilated in a few generations."
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Thank you to Mitchell Bell and Men's Club for organizing a successful Pesach Mitzvah Fair
Service Note Father/son minyan is ON this Sunday at 9:15 am.
Commemorating a Yahrzeit during Nisan Due to the joyous nature the season, we do not recite memorial prayers during the month of Nisan. If you have a Yaarzeit during Nisan and would like a Kel Maleh recited, either come to Mincha this Shabbat afternoon or send your loved one's name (Hebrew name and name of person's father) to Rabbi Cohen (rabbicohen@cas-stamford.org). He will recite the prayer on your behalf either on Shabbat or next week.
Rabbi Cohen Halacha of the Week - Cholent and Crockpot Revisted - Letter to the Editor
  • Last week, we explored the guidelines for cooking cholent in a crockpot and the requirement to either insure the food is half cooked before Shabbat or if not, put raw food into the crockpot immediately prior to Shabbat. Thank you to a congregant for sending the following clarification.
  • Hi Rabbi Cohen-

Just wanted to point out a bit of engineering to you about crock pots. Crock pots take a long time once turned on to bring foods up to cooking temperature because of the low heat output. If your cholent takes 5 hours to cook once you start the process, I would estimate that during the first 1 to 3 hours (depending on the setting) the food does not cook at all, it is just heating up. Therefore, it would just be the last (approximately) three hours that does the cooking and you would need to put it up approximately 3.5 hours before Shabbos to get it half-cooked. The times are quite variable, depending on factors such as amount of food in the crock pot (the more food, the longer it takes to get up to cooking time) and heat output of the crockpot.

    Sincerely,

    A Friendly Engineer

Dr. Dovid Katz: The Old Hebrew -Yiddish Conflict and Its Ongoing Legacies
Dr. Katz's involvement with Holocaust issues started with his thousands of hours of Yiddish dialectological interviews with survivors from the historic Lithuanian lands and turned to both academic research and public activism when Lithuanian prosecutors began accusing survivors of "war crimes" for having joined the anti-Nazi partisans. He coined the term "Holocaust Obfuscation" to define 21st century East European revisionism and in 2009 founded the web journal DefendingHistory.com which he has edited since.
